  • 1909 – The first National Women’s Day was celebrated in the United States on February 28, initiated by the Socialist Party of America to honor female workers.
  • 1910 – The idea of an International Women’s Day was proposed at the International Socialist Women’s Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark.
  • 1911 – The first official International Women’s Day was celebrated on March 19 in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. More than a million people participated in protests demanding women’s rights, including better working conditions and voting rights.
  • 1917 – Russian women held massive protests against World War I, demanding peace and bread. Their movement led to the abdication of the Russian Czar and eventually played a role in the Russian Revolution. Following this, March 8 was officially declared Women’s Day in Soviet Russia.
