Massive Earthquake in Myanmar

The earthquake that struck Myanmar and Thailand on Friday, March 28, has caused widespread devastation. The situation in Myanmar has become increasingly dire, prompting the military to appeal for international assistance. A state of emergency has been declared in multiple regions. Meanwhile, in Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, several buildings have collapsed, leading to a severe crisis. The Prime Minister of Thailand has declared Bangkok an emergency zone to facilitate rapid relief efforts.

Reports indicate that over 1,000 people have lost their lives in Myanmar, while at least 10 deaths have been reported in Thailand.

On March 28, strong tremors were felt across China, Myanmar, Thailand, and India. The first earthquake struck Myanmar at 12:50 PM, measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale. The epicenter was located 10 kilometers deep near Sagaing city, Myanmar. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), a second earthquake of 6.4 magnitude followed 12 minutes later. The aftermath has left behind catastrophic scenes in Myanmar and Thailand.

Emergency Declared in Myanmar

The worst-hit cities in Myanmar include Mandalay and Sagaing, following which the military declared a state of emergency in multiple affected areas, including Mandalay, Naypyidaw, Bago, and Shan. Since the epicenter was in Sagaing, the central region has borne the brunt of the destruction.
