Vasava Raju Encounter: In one of the biggest anti-Naxal operations in recent times, security forces in Chhattisgarh gunned down 26 Naxals, including the dreaded Vasava Raju, also known as Basava Raju, carrying a bounty of ₹1 crore. The encounter occurred in the dense forests of Bijapur and Narayanpur districts on May 21.

The operation marks a turning point in the fight against Left-wing extremism, as Vasava Raju was a top commander and strategist of the outlawed CPI (Maoist) group.

Who Was Vasava Raju?

Vasava Raju, also known by several aliases such as Namballa Keshav Rao, Gaganna, BR, Prakash, was a senior cadre and general secretary of the CPI (Maoist). He hailed from Srikakulam, Andhra Pradesh and was believed to be around 75 years old. Despite his age, he was considered one of the most dangerous Naxal leaders, skilled in explosives and guerrilla warfare.

  • Held top post: CPI (Maoist) General Secretary since 2018
  • Armed with AK-47 and led multiple deadly attacks
  • Mastermind behind major Naxal operations in Dantewada, Sukma, and more

Vasava Raju was a wanted accused in multiple cases by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), including a 2019 IED blast that killed five security personnel.

Details of the Encounter

According to Chhattisgarh Police, the encounter began after intelligence inputs about Naxal presence in the Abujhmad region, a forested and strategically vital area in Bastar division. Teams from multiple District Reserve Guard (DRG) units, including those from Narayanpur, Bijapur, Dantewada, and Kondagaon, launched a coordinated strike.

  • Time: Early hours of May 21, 2025
  • Place: Abujhmad forest, Bijapur-Narayanpur border
  • Outcome: 27 Naxals killed, 1 soldier martyred, 1 injured

Security forces recovered a cache of weapons, including 12-bore rifles, pistols, and explosive material from the encounter site.

Police Statement

SP Prabhat Kumar of Narayanpur stated: “We had credible intel about Naxal movement. Our teams engaged the rebels in a fierce gunfight. Among those neutralized is Vasava Raju, though official confirmation is awaited.”

Deputy CM Vijay Sharma praised the forces: “This is a heroic act by our DRG teams. The killing of over 26 Naxals, including top leaders, is a landmark victory.”

Why This Matters: Impact on Naxal Movement

The death of Vasava Raju is being seen as a decapitating blow to the Maoist movement in Central India. For years, he had played a crucial role in planning ambushes, coordinating with other zones, and maintaining ideological and operational control.

Key Reasons This Is Significant:

  • Leadership Vacuum: With Raju gone, the Maoist chain of command is disrupted.
  • Loss of Tactical Expertise: He was one of the last remaining Naxals trained in classical guerrilla warfare.
  • Boost to Morale of Forces: Major encouragement for ongoing anti-Naxal operations.

This success also follows a series of recent victories, including the Karreguttalu operation where 31 Naxals were killed, and over 150 bunkers and a local arms factory were destroyed.

Government’s Message: “Surrender or Perish”

Home Minister Vijay Sharma reiterated the Centre’s stance: “We don’t want to fire a single bullet. The government is committed to peace and invites Naxals to join the mainstream. Violence serves no purpose.”

The Centre has set a deadline of March 31, 2026 to eliminate Left-wing extremism from India.

ByNews-View: A Blow to Red Terror

The killing of Vasava Raju and his top aides in Bijapur marks a major tactical win for Indian security forces. It weakens the operational backbone of Naxal forces and reinforces the government’s resolve to end insurgency in affected regions.

As one of the most wanted Naxals in India, Vasava Raju’s end could be the beginning of a new, more secure era for tribal heartlands.
