UCC Bill : Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill was introduced in the Uttarakhand Assembly on Tuesday. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami introduced this bill on the second day of the special session of the Assembly called for the UCC Bill. After presenting this bill, CM Dhami also posted a video on social media site X. He wrote- Introduced the historic “Uniform Civil Code Bill” in the Assembly.
During the presentation of the bill by the Chief Minister, the ruling party MLAs also raised slogans of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai, Vande Mataram and Jai Shri Ram”. The state cabinet on Sunday accepted the UCC draft and gave approval to table it in the House as a bill.
On the other hand, Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Yashpal Arya said that there is doubt on the intentions of the government. The copy of the bill has been found half incomplete. Now there has to be a discussion on this at 2 o’clock. In such a situation, what will we discuss and what will we read in such a long time?
This draft of 740 pages in four volumes was submitted to the Chief Minister on Friday by a five-member committee headed by retired Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai.
Under UCC, the minimum age for marriage of girls in all religions will be 18 years.
Men and women will have equal rights to divorce.
It is necessary to declare live in relationship.
There will be a punishment of 6 months for not getting live-in registration done.
Children born in live-in marriage have equal rights in property.
There is no condition for a woman to remarry.
Scheduled Tribes are out of scope.
Prohibition on polygamy, second marriage cannot take place while the husband or wife is alive.
Registration of marriage is not necessary without registration facility.
Girls will get equal rights in inheritance.
What will happen if UCC is implemented?
There will be same laws for marriage and divorce in every religion.
The laws which are for Hindus are also for others.
Without divorce you will not be able to marry more than once.
Muslims will not be allowed to marry four times.
What will not change with UCC?
There will be no difference on religious beliefs.
There is no impact on religious customs.
It is not that the marriage will not be conducted by a Pandit or a Maulvi.
There is no effect on eating habits, worship and dress.

Enacting an Act on UCC and implementing it in the state was one of the major promises made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to the public during the 2022 assembly elections. After creating history by winning for the second consecutive time in Uttarakhand, which came into existence in the year 2000, after assuming power in March 2022, in the first meeting of the cabinet, the BJP had approved the formation of an expert committee to prepare the draft of the UCC.
After the enactment of the law, Uttarakhand will be the first state in the country to implement UCC after independence. UCC has been in force in Goa since the days of Portuguese rule. Under UCC, uniform laws of marriage, divorce, alimony, land, property and inheritance will be applicable to all citizens in the state, irrespective of the religion they follow.
Meanwhile, when the UCC bill was presented in the state assembly, former Uttarakhand CM Harish Rawat said, “If the state government, in the name of Uniform Civil Code, brings a law for the ruling class to interfere in the traditions of another community, then will there be animosity?” Won’t it?”
