Spiritual Guru Sadhguru, Health News: Spiritual guru Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev had to undergo brain surgery due to a blood clot in the brain. He underwent surgery on Sunday, March 17 at Apollo Hospital in Delhi, after which his condition is continuously improving.

Isha Foundation has told in a blog that Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev was suffering from severe headache for the last four weeks. This pain was so severe that no one else would have been able to bear it, but Sadhguru Maharaj continued all his work. He did not cancel his daily programs. He even attended the all-night Mahashivratri program on 8 March 2024.

On reaching Delhi, by the afternoon of 15 March, Sadhguru Jaggi’s headache increased a lot. On the advice of neurologist Dr. Vinit Suri at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, Sadhguru’s MRI scan was done at 4:30 pm on the same day. The examination revealed that there were too many blood clots in his brain. Due to this, he had to undergo immediate brain surgery.

First understand that brain bleed means that

blood clots in the brain are a type of brain stroke. This happens when there is a sudden blockage in the blood supply to the brain. The brain does not get oxygen. There are small blood vessels to supply oxygen to the brain. When one of the vessels in the brain starts leaking or gets blocked, blood clots start forming inside the brain. This clotted blood puts pressure on the brain. If not treated immediately, it can be fatal. Its treatment is possible only through surgery as soon as possible.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, brain bleed is a serious disease that can often occur due to two reasons. First, if there is any kind of injury to the head due to a fall, then the blood vessel in the brain can burst and blood can clot there. Second, if someone’s blood pressure is very high and even medicines are not able to control it, then the blood vessel in the brain can become weak and burst.

How many types of brain bleeds are there?

A brain is made up of many different parts, so it is not enough for doctors to just say brain bleed. Knowing where the blood has accumulated in the brain is very important for treatment. Brain bleed can happen in two places. First, blood clots in the outer layer of the brain. That is, inside the skull but outside the brain. Second, blood can accumulate in a specific part inside the brain.

What are the symptoms of brain bleed?

The symptoms of brain bleed depend on where the blood has accumulated, but there can be some common symptoms that should not be ignored. Such as numbness on one side of the body, sudden tingling sensation in hands, legs or face, sudden severe headache, persistent nausea and vomiting, feeling confused, nervous or faint, sudden dizziness, feeling very tired or feeling sleepy again and again.

Apart from this, symptoms like difficulty in swallowing food or water, reduction or loss of vision, stiffness in the neck, not being able to tolerate bright light, difficulty in standing straight or walking, difficulty in breathing or very slow or very fast heartbeat, sudden jerks in the body, fainting and loss of consciousness for a long time also indicate the severity of brain bleed.

The first symptom of a brain bleed is a sudden and severe headache in most people. This headache is so severe that people describe it as the most severe headache of their life.

Who is most at risk of brain bleed?

Anyone can have a brain bleed at any age. This disease can happen to anyone from newborns to adults, but it is more common in people over 65 years of age. They may be at a higher risk of brain bleed if they have these problems: Having high blood pressure for a long time, excessive alcohol or drug consumption can weaken the brain.

Apart from this, smoking damages the blood vessels. Blood clots in the brain can also occur due to high blood pressure during pregnancy or changes in the body after delivery. In some diseases, the blood vessels become weak, which increases the risk of them bursting.

How is brain bleed detected?

Doctors perform several tests to detect brain bleed. First of all, they examine the nervous system (neurological test). If the doctor feels that there may be a problem of brain bleed, then some other tests are conducted. With the help of CT scan, MRI scan, MR angiogram test, the doctor can find out the place of blood clot in the brain, how much blood has clotted and sometimes even the reason for it.

A CT scan is a type of X-ray test in which pictures of the brain are taken with the help of a computer. A CT scan can show a blood clot in the brain. While an MRI scan is a type of imaging test, more accurate pictures of the brain can be taken with the help of magnets and radio waves. An MRI scan can better see swelling or blood clots in the brain.

MR angiogram is also a special type of MRI scan, with the help of which the blood vessels of the brain can be seen. This helps the doctor to know in which vessel of the brain the blood clot has accumulated.

How is brain bleed treated?

Treatment of brain bleed depends on where the blood has collected and how much it has collected. The main aim of treatment is to stop the bleeding and to find out the cause and then treat it. Doctors often suggest two methods of treatment. One is brain surgery. When the problem becomes bigger, then an operation has to be done for brain bleed. The second is medicines. If the problem is detected at the very beginning, then medicines can be given to stop or reduce brain bleed. Doctors can also give medicines to reduce high blood pressure or pain.

How is brain surgery performed?

Sometimes surgery is needed to remove a clot in the brain or to remove the cause of the bleeding. These operations can be of several types: decompression, craniectomy, craniotomy

  • In decompression, the doctor makes a hole in the head and removes the clotted blood.
  • In a craniectomy, the doctor removes a small piece of the skull to reduce pressure on the brain.
  • In craniotomy, the doctor first removes a piece of the head, then after treatment the same piece is reattached.

Not every person with a brain bleed needs surgery. The doctor decides this based on the patient’s age, health, location and amount of blood clot.

Who does brain surgery?

Brain operations are performed by brain specialist doctors, who are called neurosurgeons. They do not perform the operation alone. There are many other trained medical staff with them. There is also an anesthesiologist. This doctor gives numbing medicine (anesthesia) to the patient during the operation so that the patient does not feel any sensation or pain.

Brain bleed is life threatening because brain cells need constant oxygen. If blood does not reach the brain, these cells start dying in just 3-4 minutes. Therefore, it is very important to visit a doctor as soon as possible when there is a blood clot in the brain. The sooner treatment is received, the greater the chances of recovery.
