Naima Khatoon New VC of AMU: Aligarh Muslim University has taken a historic step. Professor Naima Khatoon has been appointed the first woman vice-chancellor. Naima Khatoon is the current principal of AMU’s Women’s College and wife of acting vice-chancellor Mohammad Gulrez. Naima Khatoon will be the first woman to hold this post in 100 years. She was appointed vice-chancellor after getting approval from President Draupadi Murmu . The President is also the visitor of the university.
Permission was sought from the Election Commission
The approval of the Election Commission of India (ECI) was sought in view of the Model Code of Conduct coming into force. The official notification said, “Naima Khatoon, Principal of Women’s College, has been appointed as the Vice Chancellor of AMU for a period of five years. The ECI has stated that it has no objection to the proposal regarding the appointment of the AMU Vice Chancellor from the point of view of the Model Code of Conduct, provided no political mileage is taken from it.”
Naima Khatoon is a PhD in Psychology
Naima Khatoon, who received her PhD in psychology from AMU, was appointed lecturer in the same department in 1988. She was promoted as professor in 2006. After this, she was appointed principal of Women’s College in 2014.
Begum Sultan Jahan became the Vice Chancellor in 1920
Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College, established in 1875, was renamed Aligarh Muslim University in 1920. In 1920, Begum Sultan Jahan was appointed the Vice Chancellor of AMU. Begum Sultan Jahan belonged to the Bhopal royal family. After this, Naima Khatoon is the first woman to be appointed Vice Chancellor in a period of 100 years.
Aligarh Muslim University has its own identity in the world of education in India. It was established on 24 May 1857. At the time of its establishment, it was known as Muslim Anglo Oriental School. In 1920, it was made Aligarh Muslim University. It was established on the lines of Cambridge University during the British rule.
