This is the first time the leaders will meet again after attending dinner at PM Modi’s residence during the G-20 summit held in India last year. A formal bilateral meeting may be held in Italy. But it is also possible that due to schedule constraints, the leaders may have to stay away from the meeting. PM Modi’s schedule will also be very busy in the G-7 summit. PM Modi’s meetings with French President Emmanuel Macron, British PM Rishi Sunak, Japanese PM Fumio Kishida, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Italian PM Giorgia Meloni are already scheduled. PM Modi may also meet Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.

Speaking to reporters on Air Force One, US NSA Jake Sullivan said that the failed plot to assassinate Gurpatwant Singh Pannu will be an ongoing topic of discussion between the US and India. Diplomatic sources have also not ruled out the possibility of this issue being raised in the Modi-Biden meeting. India is also fully prepared to respond.

Joe Biden had also raised this issue in front of PM Modi in September last year. Now Jake Sullivan himself can discuss with India the progress or lack of it in that investigation. In fact, Jake Sullivan is coming to India next week, on June 18. During this time also this issue is likely to be raised once again. However, till now his visit has not been officially announced. Who is Gurapwant Pannu?

Gurpatwant Singh Pannu is a prominent and controversial figure known for his leadership in the Khalistan movement, which advocates for a separate Sikh state called Khalistan, independent from India. Pannu is a key figure in the organization Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), a group that has been banned in India due to its separatist activities. He has been vocal in his criticisms of the Indian government and has used various international platforms to promote the cause of Khalistan.

Pannu’s activities have garnered significant attention and concern from Indian authorities, leading to his designation as a terrorist under India’s Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Despite these measures, Pannu continues to actively campaign for a global referendum on Khalistan, leveraging social media and international legal forums to advance his agenda. His actions have created diplomatic tensions, particularly between India and countries where he operates, such as the United States and Canada.
