Oscar-winning music director AR Rahman and his wife Saira today announced through their lawyer that they have “taken the difficult decision to separate” from each other after nearly 30 years of marriage. “After many years of marriage, Mrs Saira and her husband Mr AR Rahman have decided to separate from each other,” said a statement from their lawyer Vandana Shah & Associates.

The lawyer said the decision was taken “after a period of great emotional stress in their relationship”. “Despite their deep love for each other, the couple have found that the stress and difficulties have created a gulf between them that no one can bridge at this time”, the statement said, adding that “this decision has come out of pain and suffering”.

AR Rahman‘s band member and bass guitarist Mohini Dey has also decided to leave her husband. 26-year-old Mohini Dey has decided that she will no longer spend her life with her musician Mark Hartsch.
The statement further said, “Mrs. Saira and her husband Mr. A.R. Rahman request privacy from the public during this challenging time and hope that people will understand the situation as they go through this difficult phase in their lives.” Rahman expressed regret that he could not complete “thirty years”. But hoped that there would be some meaning in “this chaos”.
“We had hoped to reach 30 years but it seems all things have a hidden end. Even God’s throne can tremble with the weight of broken hearts. Yet in this shattering we search for meaning. Though the pieces may never find their place again. Thank you, our friends, for your love and for respecting our privacy as we go through this delicate time,” Rahman wrote on Instagram. The couple married in 1995 and are parents to three children: Khatija, Rahima and Amin. In his Instagram Stories, their son Amin wrote, “We request everyone to respect our privacy at this time.”
AR Rahman, who won an Oscar for his work in Slumdog Millionaire, was once described by Time magazine as the “Mozart of Madras”. The musician, who started playing music at the age of five, got his first break with the 1992 film Roja. It was a hit and Rahman’s soundtrack won him the National Award for Best Music Director. On her popular chat show ‘Rendezvous with Simi Garewal’ in 2012, Simi Garewal asked the veteran musician, “Why did you opt for an arranged marriage?” Smiling, Rahman said, “Honestly, I did not have time to look for a bride.” The host laughed at this.
