YS Sharmila joined Congress: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s sister YS Sharmila joined Congress on Thursday (04-01-2024). He took membership of the party in the presence of Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge and MP Rahul Gandhi.

Sharmila’s joining Congress will strengthen the party in Andhra Pradesh. Sharmila is the sister of Andhra Pradesh CM Jagan Mohan Reddy. As soon as he joined Congress, he also announced the merger of his party YSR Telangana with Congress.

Sharmila said that my father’s dream was that Rahul Gandhi should become the Prime Minister, I am happy that I will work for it. Sharmila said that as a Christian, she was deeply saddened by the Manipur violence. This is what will happen if the secular party is not in power.

YS Sharmila is the daughter of former Andhra CM YS Rajasekhara Reddy. Rajasekhara Reddy was in Congress. He died in a plane crash when he was CM. After her death, when the party did not make Sharmila’s brother Jagan Mohan Reddy the CM, Jagan Mohan formed his own party YSR Congress.

Initially Sharmila became the YSR Congress Party convenor and campaigned in Andhra along with her brother and mother. In 2021, due to differences with his brother, he broke ties with YSR Congress and formed a new party YSR Telangana Party in Telangana. 

Who is Y. S. Sharmila?

Y. S. Sharmila is an Indian politician and the sister of Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, the Chief Minister of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Y.S. Sharmila belongs to the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP), the same political party as her brother.

Yeduguri Sandinti Sharmila Reddy (born 1974), also known as Y. S. Sharmila, is an Indian politician from the Indian National Congress. She is the younger sister of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and the daughter of Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy and Y. S. Vijayamma. She worked as the party convener for the YSR Congress Party.

Political career of Y. S. Sharmila

Early political career
Sharmila made headlines after she took up campaigning on behalf of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) along with her mother Y. S. Vijayamma, in the absence of her elder brother Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy from June 2012 in Andhra Pradesh. YSRCP won 15 of the 18 assembly seats and 1 of 1 Parliament seat for which the by-elections were held.

Sharmila began her 3,000 km-walkathon (1,900 mi) at Idupulapaya in Kadapa district on 18 October 2012. She completed it on 4 August 2013 in Ichchapuram. She toured 14 districts as part of the walkathon.

Before the 2019 Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly election, Sharmila undertook an 11-day bus Yatra across Andhra Pradesh in branded buses with a “Bye Bye Babu” timer clock, suggesting that it was time for the then Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.The campaign under the name “Praja Theerpu – Bye Bye Babu” covered 1,553 km (965 mi) and 39 public addresses. She also handed out over 20,000 autographed caps.[citation needed]

YSR Telangana Party
In February 2021, Sharmila stated that she had political differences with her brother, Jagan Mohan Reddy, who is the founder of the Yuvajana Shramika Rythu Congress Party, and claimed there was no presence of the party in the state of Telangana.

On 9 April 2021, Sharmila had announced that she would launch a new political party on 8 July 2021 in Telangana. She chose the date because it is the birth date of her father, Rajasekhara Reddy. Ahead of the party’s launch, she has started campaigning against the incumbent Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government.

On 8 July 2021, she announced the formation of the YSR Telangana Party.

During November 2023, Y.S. Sharmila declared that her party would abstain from participating in the Telangana Legislative Assembly election. She delivered this announcement to the media at an event in Hyderabad. Sharmila acknowledged the electoral potential for the Congress party and underscored that their aim was not to undermine the Congress but rather to pledge support if the Congress were to assume power, ensuring the successful implementation of their policies.

Return to Congress Party

Sharmila joined and merged her party into the Indian National Congress on 4 January 2024 in the presence of AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi.

Personal life

Sharmila was born into a Reddy political-business family to Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy and Vijayamma in Hyderabad She has two children. Sharmila has an elder brother Jagan Mohan Reddy, who is the current Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. She resides in Hyderabad.
