Born as Harikrishna Goswami on July 24, 1937, in Abbottabad, British India (now in Pakistan), Manoj Kumar’s life was deeply impacted by the Partition of India. When riots broke out, his family fled to Delhi, where they lived in a refugee camp for several months before settling permanently.

A Struggling Actor Who Became Bollywood’s Patriotic Star

Manoj Kumar’s entry into Bollywood was not easy. In his early days, he worked on film sets as a light boy, assisting behind the scenes. His persistence paid off when he got his first minor role in Fashion (1957).

His first lead role came in Kanch Ki Gudiya (1960), and soon, he became a recognized face with films like:
Hariyali Aur Raasta (1962)
Woh Kaun Thi? (1964)
Himalaya Ki God Mein (1965)

However, his real breakthrough came in 1965 when he played Shaheed Bhagat Singh in the patriotic film Shaheed. The film’s emotional impact and hit songs like “Mera Rang De Basanti Chola” struck a chord with the audience, marking the beginning of his patriotic image.

The Turning Point: How Upkaar Made Him Bharat Kumar

Manoj Kumar’s life changed forever when Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri urged him to make a film based on his slogan “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan.”

Taking inspiration from this, Manoj Kumar wrote, directed, and starred in Upkaar (1967), a film that beautifully portrayed the sacrifices of Indian farmers and soldiers.

Iconic Song: “Mere Desh Ki Dharti Sona Ugle…” became India’s most celebrated patriotic song.

The film won multiple Filmfare Awards, including:
Best Film
Best Director
Best Story

This was the moment when Manoj Kumar became Bharat Kumar, a name that would stay with him for the rest of his life.

A Career Built on Patriotism and Social Justice

Following Upkaar, Manoj Kumar continued making films that blended entertainment with strong nationalistic and social messages. Some of his most iconic films include:

Purab Aur Paschim (1970) – Showcased India’s rich culture and the importance of staying connected to one’s roots.
Shor (1972) – A heart-touching story of a father’s love for his son.
Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974) – Highlighted social inequalities and unemployment.
Kranti (1981) – A grand historical film on India’s freedom struggle, where he directed Dilip Kumar.

His films weren’t just successful; they ignited a deep sense of nationalism in generations of Indians.
