Who is Tehreek-e-Hurriyat?

Tehreek-e-Hurriyat is a separatist political organization based in the Indian-administered region of Jammu and Kashmir. The term “Tehreek-e-Hurriyat” translates to “Movement for Freedom” in Urdu. The organization was founded in 2004 and is part of the larger Kashmiri separatist movement that seeks autonomy or independence for the region.

Led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani, a prominent Kashmiri separatist leader, Tehreek-e-Hurriyat has been a key player in articulating the political aspirations of those advocating for Kashmiri self-determination. The organization has often called for the end of Indian rule in Kashmir and the establishment of an independent state.

Tehreek-e-Hurriyat has been involved in various protests, strikes, and movements to express opposition to Indian governance in Kashmir. The organization’s stance is rooted in the belief that the people of Kashmir should have the right to decide their political future through a plebiscite, as originally outlined in United Nations resolutions.

It’s important to note that the political landscape in Jammu and Kashmir is complex, with various groups and stakeholders holding diverse opinions on the region’s status. The activities and positions of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat are viewed differently by different parties, including the governments of India and Pakistan, as well as the international community. The Kashmir conflict remains a sensitive and longstanding issue, with ongoing discussions and efforts aimed at finding a peaceful resolution.
