Delhi Drenched with 228.1 mm of Rain

During the monsoon season, Delhi receives about 650 mm of rain. On the first day of heavy rains this season, the capital received a third of the total monsoon rain on Friday.

Delhi-NCR received the highest rainfall in a single day in the month of June after 88 years. This created flood-like conditions, with cars submerged as 4 to 5 feet of water filled the roads. According to the IMD, the capital received 228 mm of rain from 8:30 am on Thursday to 8:30 am on Friday. The roof and supporting pillar of the pick-up-drop area at Terminal-1 of Indira Gandhi International Airport collapsed. Several cars were buried under it. A cab driver died, 8 people are injured.

Lodhi Road Records 192.8 mm Rainfall

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the weather station at Lodhi Road recorded 192.8 mm rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am today, with the Ridge receiving 150.4 mm, Palam 106.6 mm, Delhi University 139 mm, Pitampura 138 mm, Pusa 89 mm, Mayur Vihar 75 mm and Tughlakabad 70.5 mm.

IMD Forecasts Heavy Rains Over the Weekend

The weather department has forecast generally cloudy sky with moderate to heavy rain and thundershowers on Saturday, along with strong winds with speeds reaching 30 to 40 kmph, as the city will be on an orange alert. The IMD has also forecast heavy to very heavy rains in Delhi over the weekend.

Congress-BJP blamed each other

Congress alleged that Prime Minister Modi had inaugurated Terminal-1 on March 10, 2024. Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu said that the part of Terminal-1 that collapsed was constructed and inaugurated in 2009 during the Congress-led UPA government. Earlier on June 27, the shed of Jabalpur airport fell on an officer’s car. PM Modi had virtually inaugurated the airport 3 months ago.

The structure of airports across the country will be checked: The central government has ordered to check the structure of all the airports in the country. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has issued a circular to check the structural strength of all the big and small airports in the country. This investigation has been ordered to be completed in the next 2-5 days and its report has been submitted to the ministry.
