Delhi in Distress due to First rain of Monsoon: Terminal 1 Roof Collapses at IGI Airport, 1 Dead, Several injured; Flights Suspended| Delhi-NCR areas submerged

Delhi Monsoon Chaos: Pre-monsoon rains started in Delhi-NCR on Thursday (27 June), which continued on Friday (28 June). There was heavy rain for a few hours at night. Due to this, many areas of Delhi-NCR are flooded with 2 to 4 feet of water. The roof of Terminal-1 of Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport collapsed. Many taxis and cars came under its grip. 6 people sitting in them were injured.

Delhi Fire Service (DFS) officials said that the incident took place at 5 am on Friday. Search operations are being carried out to rescue people trapped in vehicles. Apart from the roof sheet of Terminal-1, the support beam has also collapsed. This damaged the cars parked in the pick-up and drop area of ​​the terminal. Three fire engines are engaged in relief and rescue operations at the airport.

Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu also reacted to the incident. He wrote on X, ‘I am personally monitoring the situation. All airlines have been advised to assist affected passengers at Terminal-1. Rescue teams are working at the site. Rescue operations are still underway.’

The accident happened at 5.30 am

According to the fire department, this accident happened at Terminal 1 of IGI Airport at around 5.30 am on Friday. At around 5.30 am, information was received about the collapse of the roof of Terminal 1 of Delhi Airport, after which four fire tenders of the fire department were dispatched for relief and rescue. The injured have been admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, the fire department and various security agencies are busy trying to rescue the people trapped in the vehicles.

After the roof collapse incident, flights taking off from Delhi airport’s Terminal 1 have been suspended. Airport officials said that check-in counters at Terminal 1 have been closed.

Airlines should help passengers: Aviation Minister
Meanwhile, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu has said that he is personally monitoring the incident of roof collapse at T-1 of Delhi Airport. Rescue teams are working at the spot. Also, airlines have been advised to help all the affected passengers at T-1. All the injured have been taken to the hospital. Rescue operations are still going on.

Monsoon to cover Delhi by July 3

The monsoon entered three states and two union territories of North India on Thursday (27 June). Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and parts of Punjab were covered by the monsoon. The southwest monsoon was stuck in West Bengal, Bihar and Jharkhand since June 11.

Monsoon can enter Delhi, Haryana and Chandigarh between 27th and 30th June. Monsoon will completely cover Delhi by 3rd July. Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh and Rajasthan will be completely covered by 5th to 8th July. The Meteorological Department has estimated that the monsoon in June will be below normal i.e. 92% below the long period average (LPA).

Monsoon has shown its colours in Delhi-NCR. It has been raining heavily in Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad and the entire NCR since early Friday morning. Due to the rain, the weather has become cool and cold. There is relief from the heat and the weather of Delhi-NCR has become quite pleasant. When the people of Delhi woke up on Friday morning, there was a flood on the roads. Yes, due to heavy rain in Delhi-NCR, the water has reached up to the knees on the roads. Vehicles are getting submerged. Traffic problems are now being seen at some places. Traffic jams are being seen at many places since morning.

Delhi Traffic Police has issued an advisory for Delhiites. Delhi Traffic Police said, ‘Due to waterlogging near Y-Point Salimgarh and Nigambodh Ghat, traffic on Outer Ring Road is affected on both carriageways from Shantivan towards ISBT and vice versa. Please plan your journey by looking at the traffic alert.’
