Manipur Violence Explodes Again: Manipur is again burning in the fire of violence. The mob has become violent after the kidnapping of 6 people and the recovery of their bodies in Jiribam after an encounter between militants and security forces. The houses of many ministers have been attacked. The protesters had also tried to attack the CM’s house.

After the brutal killing of 6 members of a family by Kuki militants, the angry Meitei community has come out on the streets. They are continuously staging violent protests. On the other hand, the Kuki community is calling the encounter of November 11 fake. These people say that they will cremate their bodies only after receiving the postmortem report. The Kuki community says that they suspect that the security forces have killed them after catching them.

Manipur Violence: What is the situation now ?

The current situation in Manipur is once again the same as before. Many areas of the state are in the grip of violence. On one hand, the people of the Kuki community are resorting to violence to demand their rights, while on the other hand, the Meitei community is on the streets demanding strict action against the murder of six members of the same family. In view of the current situation, all schools in Manipur have been closed on November 19. Internet service is already closed.

Manipur Violence: What is the new challenge?

People belonging to the Kuki community are demanding justice for those killed in this violence. Hundreds of people also protested in Churachandpur on Friday. Kuki organizations have also claimed that the dead were not militants but village volunteers.

At the same time, the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum, the main organization representing the Kuki-Ji community, has said that the last rites of the 10 Kuki youths killed in the firing with the Central Police Force will not be performed until the post-mortem report is handed over to their families.

On the other hand, the Meitei community is also on the streets and is threatening a big protest if strict action is not taken against those Kuki militants who kidnapped and later killed 6 members of the same family.

Manipur Violence: What did the Home Minister say ?

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday (18 November 2024) reviewed the security situation in Manipur and the deployment of security forces there for the second consecutive day. Sources said that Shah directed the top officials to focus on restoring peace and order in the state affected by ethnic violence as soon as possible. 

Amit Shah said that he also took stock of the deployment of central forces in the state and directed the officials to restore peace and order there as soon as possible.

Manipur Violence: How is Manipur being controlled ?

To control the situation in Manipur, the central government has decided to send 50 more companies of CAPF. In this way, now 268 companies of CAPF will be deployed in the state. The number of these will increase by five thousand soldiers. In this way, the number of soldiers deployed in the violence-affected areas of the state will be 26,800.

The largest number of these 50 companies will be of CRPF companies, while the rest will be of BSF and other security forces. The additional 50 companies that will go here will have an additional 6500 paramilitary forces. There are already 40,000 central forces present here.

Manipur Violence: What are the efforts of the government ?

The state and central governments are making different efforts to stop the violence in Manipur. The state government has decided to shut down the internet in the seven violence-affected districts for the next two days. The central government has decided to send 50 additional companies of CAPF here. People are also being appealed to maintain peace.

Due to the violence in Manipur, the central government imposed AFSPA on November 14 in areas falling under Sekmai, Lamsang, Lamlai, Jiribam, Limkhong and Moirang police stations in Imphal West, Imphal East, Jirobam, Kangpokpi and Bishnupur districts. On November 16, indefinite curfew was imposed in districts like Manipur’s capital Imphal (East and West), Bishnupur, Thoubal and Kakching.

Manipur Violence: Which leaders are the targets of the attack?

The houses of three of the six MLAs, including Chief Minister N Biren Singh and his son-in-law, were also vandalised. Their properties were also burnt. Police officials said that angry people set fire to the houses of PWD Minister Govinddas Konthoujam in Ningthoukhong, Hianglam BJP MLA Y Radheshyam in Langmeidong market, BJP MLA Paonam Brojen of Wangjing Tentha in Thoubal district and Congress MLA T Lokeshwar of Khundrakpam in Imphal East district.

When did the latest incidents happen, where did they happen and who was killed?

The latest violence in Manipur started after the bodies of three women and three children of a family who were kidnapped in Jiribam last Tuesday were recovered on Saturday on the Assam-Manipur border. It is alleged that they were kidnapped by Kuki militants.
