Vizhinjam Port: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated the much-awaited Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Port in Kerala, a mega infrastructure project that is set to transform India’s maritime trade landscape forever. Developed at a cost of ₹8,867 crore, the Vizhinjam Port is being hailed as a game changer for India, being the country’s first dedicated container transshipment port.

The Vizhinjam port, located just 10 nautical miles from a key international shipping lane, is not only one of the deepest ports in India but also semi-automated and equipped to handle some of the world’s largest cargo vessels. It marks a new beginning in how India handles its shipping economy and revenue.

Why Vizhinjam Port is a Game Changer for India

PM Modi, while inaugurating the Vizhinjam port, said, “The country’s money will now be used for the country.” His words highlight the most crucial economic implication of Vizhinjam — reclaiming transshipment business that India was losing to foreign ports.

Currently, over 75% of India’s transshipment cargo is handled by foreign ports like Colombo, Singapore, and Port Klang. This results in huge outflow of revenue and delays in logistics. With Vizhinjam now operational, a large part of this cargo will stay within Indian waters, creating massive job opportunities and boosting local economies, especially in Kerala.

PM Modi’s Vision: From Sea Possibilities to Prosperity

Addressing the gathering at the inaugural event, PM Modi linked Vizhinjam’s development to a new era of economic progress. He stated that the Vizhinjam port ’s capacity will triple in the coming years, and it is set to become the hub of maritime trade in South Asia.

He also reflected on the spiritual importance of the day, as it marked the birth anniversary of Adi Shankaracharya, the great philosopher born in Kerala. Modi added a personal touch by recalling his unveiling of Adi Shankaracharya’s statue in Kedarnath, drawing a symbolic link between Kerala and Kedarnath, the coasts and the mountains, the material and the spiritual growth of India.

Who Attended the Inauguration?

The event saw the presence of several dignitaries, including:

  • Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar
  • Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan
  • Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal
  • Union Ministers Suresh Gopi and George Kurien
  • Kerala Ministers Saji Cherian, V Sivankutty, and GR Anil
  • MPs Shashi Tharoor, AA Rahim
  • Opposition Leader VD Satheesan
  • Thiruvananthapuram Mayor Arya Rajendran
  • Former Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar

Despite political tensions, the event drew wide national attention.

Today, at Vizhinjam, history, destiny and possibility came together as a 30-year-old dream of Kerala became India’s gateway to the world.

Developed by Adani Ports: India’s Largest Port Developer

The Vizhinjam port has been developed by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ), under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Adani Group’s expertise in port management and logistics has been crucial in delivering a port that matches global standards.

Notably, the Vizhinjam port is already operational in a trial phase and has handled over 285 ships and 593,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) even before its formal inauguration. It is India’s first semi-automated transshipment port, paving the way for faster cargo handling and efficient logistics.

Vizhinjam Port: How It Redefines India's Maritime Power

Vizhinjam Port: The New Maritime Hub of South Asia

One of the biggest achievements for Vizhinjam Port came when MSC Turkey, one of the largest container ships in the world, docked at the port. Furthermore, MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company) — the world’s largest shipping line — has included Vizhinjam in its prestigious Jade service.

This high-capacity shipping route connects Europe to Asia via South Africa and is crucial for global trade. Vizhinjam’s inclusion in such an elite route alongside ports like Shanghai, Singapore, Qingdao, and Busan cements its place as South Asia’s premier port.

Vizhinjam Port: Political Controversy Over Recognition

While the event celebrated a major infrastructure milestone, it also stirred political controversy. The Congress-led UDF opposition criticized the organizers for not properly acknowledging the contribution of late former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, who had signed the original agreement and laid the foundation stone for the project.

Despite opposition leaders like VD Satheesan being present at the event, there were concerns over not formally inviting or honoring those who initiated the project.

The Bigger Picture: Strategic and Economic Significance

  • Strategic Location: Located at the southern tip of India, Vizhinjam provides quick access to global shipping routes, saving both time and cost for exporters.
  • Revenue Retention: The port is expected to save billions in foreign exchange, which earlier went to foreign ports.
  • Job Creation: Thousands of direct and indirect jobs are expected to be generated in Kerala through port operations, logistics, and ancillary industries.
  • Boost to Kerala’s Economy: The port will drive industrial activity in southern India, leading to a rise in exports and manufacturing support.

ByNews-view: India’s Shipping Future Starts at Vizhinjam

Vizhinjam Port is not just a port — it’s a revolution in India’s maritime future. It signals India’s readiness to become a global logistics powerhouse, and underlines PM Modi’s vision of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).

With its operational depth, strategic location, and modern facilities, Vizhinjam is India’s answer to global port giants, and it’s only just getting started.
