Story of becoming Vice President
Kamala Harris has created history by becoming America’s first woman, first Indian-origin, first black Vice President. Harris, popularly known as ‘Female Obama’, was also a first-time member of the Senate. In a historic speech after her victory in November 2020, Harris remembered her late mother Shyamala Gopalan, a cancer researcher and civil rights activist from India, saying that she had prepared her for this big day in her political career. She also said that she may be the first woman to hold the post of Vice President, but she will not be the last.

Harris (59) has set many examples. She is the first woman, first Indian-origin and first African American to become the District Attorney of San Francisco. Joe Biden, the Democratic Party’s candidate for the presidential election (America Presidential Election 2020), chose Harris as his vice-presidential candidate in August. Harris was once a bitter critic of her former rival Biden. 59-year-old Harris is one of the three Asian American members of the Senate. During Obama’s tenure, she was popular as ‘Female Obama’.
Kamala’s connection with India
Born on 20 October 1964, Kamala Devi Harris’ mother Shyamala Gopalan came to UC Berkeley from Tamil Nadu, India in 1960, while her father Donald J. Harris came to UC Berkeley from British Jamaica in 1961 to pursue a graduate degree in economics. The two met while studying here and decided to get married while participating in human rights movements.
Kamala Harris’s studies
Kamala, who studied at Harvard University after high school, was only seven years old when her parents separated. Kamala and her younger sister Maya lived with their mother and she had a great influence on both their lives. However, that period was not comfortable for black people.
Kamala remained connected with India
While raising Kamala and Maya, their mother kept both of them connected to their background and taught them to be proud of their shared heritage. She remained deeply connected to Indian culture. In this regard, on the Biden-Harris campaign website, Kamala has written in her autobiography “The Truths We Hold” that her mother knew that she was raising two black daughters and that they would always be seen as black, but she gave such values to her daughters that cancer researcher and human rights activist Shyamala and her two daughters came to be known as “Shyamala and the Girls”.
Kamala’s dominance in America
After studying at Harvard University, Harris studied law from the University of California. In 2003, she became the top prosecutor of San Francisco. In 2010, she was the first woman and the first black person to become California’s attorney. In 2017, Harris was elected the junior US Senator from California. When Kamala married her fellow lawyer Douglas Emhoff in 2014, she became associated with the Jewish tradition along with Indian, African and American traditions.
