₹50000 Cash Scandal: There was a huge uproar in the Rajya Sabha on Friday when a bundle of 500 rupees (50 thousand rupees) was found in the Rajya Sabha. Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar said that a bundle of notes was found from the seat of Congress MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi. The BJP demanded an investigation. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said – It is not right to name anyone before investigation.

Dhankhar said, ‘Yesterday (Thursday) after the House proceedings were adjourned, the security officials informed us that cash was found from seat number 222. This seat has been allotted to Abhishek Manu Singhvi, MP from Telangana. An investigation should be conducted in this matter as per the rules and it is being done.’

Congress MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi’s clarification…

Congress Leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi

“When I go to the Rajya Sabha, I only carry a single ₹500 note. This is the first time I have heard such a thing. I reached the House at 12:57 PM. The session started at 1:00 PM. I was in the canteen until 1:30 PM. After that, I left the Parliament.”
– Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Congress MP

Kiren Rijiju said- is it right to bring a bundle of notes in the House

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said, ‘As per routine protocol, the anti-sabotage team had checked the seats before the Parliament proceedings ended and the House was closed. During this, a bundle of notes was found. Why should there be an objection if the Speaker does not name the member? The Speaker correctly told the seat number and the name of the member sitting on that seat. What is wrong in this? There should be an investigation.’

BJP spokesperson and MP Sudhanshu Trivedi said, ‘Congress leaders have so much money that they do not even bother to take account of the money left on the benches in Parliament. Congress, which used to question everything, is today refusing to give account of the matter recovered from Parliament.’

BJP President Nadda said: “The truth should come out, clear and transparent.

BJP Chief JP Nadda

“I am confident that a thorough investigation will be conducted, and the truth will come out. In a democracy, some matters favor one side, while others favor the opposition. It is not right to target someone harshly or to cover up for someone.”
– J.P. Nadda, BJP Chief

Congress said- conspiracy to divert attention from Adani issue

Congress sources said that the notes recovered from the bench of party leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi is a conspiracy to divert attention from the Adani issue. If someone keeps Rs 50,000 in his pocket then it is not a crime. Congress leaders have met Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhakad and requested to get the matter investigated by some agency or even form a JPC in it.

The case is of the year 2008. The Manmohan Singh government (UPA-1) was in power in the country. The Left had withdrawn support from the UPA government over the nuclear deal with the US. The UPA presented the confidence motion on July 22. On the same day, three BJP MPs – Ashok Argal, Faggan Singh Kulaste and Mahavir Bhagora reached the Lok Sabha with bundles of notes worth one crore rupees. The MPs showed the notes in the House.

The three MPs alleged that the then SP general secretary Amar Singh and the Congress president’s political secretary Ahmed Patel had offered them money to vote in support of the confidence motion. However, Amar Singh and Patel had then denied these allegations.

LK Advani, who was then the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, had claimed that the MPs were lured with Rs 3 crore each. First, one crore was given and the rest of the amount was promised later.

This was the first time when bundles of notes were thrown openly in the House. Delhi Police had also registered a case on this incident on the complaint of the then Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee.

How much money can MPs bring into the House

There is no rule about bringing currency notes into Parliament or not. Any MP can carry any amount of currency. There is no limit on this.
