Ajay Maken Claims: On the news related to lifting of freeze on Congress’ account, party leader Ajay Maken has claimed that “His party has not got any relief. They have been asked to keep Rs 115 crore in the account. This means That accounts are frozen.” In fact, the Income Tax Department has frozen the bank accounts of Congress and Youth Congress citing 45 days delay in filing returns for the financial year 2018-19. Congress Treasurer Ajay Maken disclosed this matter on Friday (16 February 2024).

Ajay Maken, in the press conference on Friday, described this action of the Income Tax Department as a direct attack on democracy. He said that the Income Tax Department, which is under the control of the Bharatiya Janata Party ruled central government, has frozen the bank accounts of the Congress. A penalty of Rs 210 crore has been demanded for opening the accounts.

Questions raised on this action before the elections

Ajay Maken said, “This is not freezing the account of Congress, but democracy has been frozen.” When only a month is left for the announcement of elections, the account of the main opposition party has been frozen. Will there be one-party rule in the country?”

Said- Frozen money received from crowdfunding

Maken said, “The funds in the accounts which have been frozen were received through online crowdfunding. On one hand, BJP itself is allegedly benefiting from unconstitutional corporate bonds, while on the other hand it is freezing the accounts of its political opponents.”
