Assembly Elections 2024: The dates for the assembly elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand have been announced. Voting will be held in a single phase in Maharashtra on November 20. Voting will be held in two phases in Jharkhand on November 13 and 20. The election results of both states will be declared on November 23.
The term of Maharashtra Assembly ends on November 26 and that of Jharkhand ends on January 5, 2025. The Election Commission held a press conference at 3.30 pm on Tuesday and also announced the dates for by-elections on 48 assembly and 2 Lok Sabha seats in 16 states.

Voting for the Lok Sabha seats will be held on November 13 in Wayanad, Kerala and on November 20 in Nanded, Maharashtra. Voting for 47 assembly seats will be held on November 13 and for the Kedarnath assembly seat in Uttarakhand on November 20. The results for all will be declared on November 23.

EC responded with facts on EVM and explained the process
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said, ‘People ask that in some countries blasts are done using pagers, then why can’t EVMs be hacked. The pager is connected, brother, not the EVM. Checking of EVMs starts 6 months in advance. Taking it to the polling, bringing it back after voting. Agents or candidates of political parties are present at every stage. The day of commissioning, batteries are inserted on that day.’
‘Commissioning takes place 5-6 days before voting. On this day, symbols are put and batteries are inserted. The agent’s signature is also put on the battery. It goes to the strong room, here also 3 levels of checking are done.
The same process will be done on the day we go out for polling. There will be videography. Numbers will also be shared, this machine will go to the booth here. Then there will be checking, votes will be cast and checked.
Voting took place the whole day. Then the machine is locked. Then signatures and accounting are done. 20 complaints have come. We will give a factual answer to every question. We will give it soon. Something else will also come, it will not stop.’
How many voters in Jharkhand?
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said that there are a total of 2.6 crore voters in Jharkhand. Out of this, 1.29 crore are women and 1.31 crore are male voters. The number of voters voting for the first time is 11.84 lakh. There will be 29,562 polling stations in Jharkhand.
1.85 crore voters in the age group of 20-29 years in Maharashtra
The Chief Election Commissioner said that there are a total of 9.63 crore voters in Maharashtra. Out of these, 4.97 crore are male voters and 4.66 crore are female voters. There are 1.85 crore voters in the age group of 20-29 years. While 20.93 lakh first time voters will vote for the first time.Â

In the Lok Sabha elections, BJP was reduced from 23 to 9, Maratha reservation is the biggest challenge
In Maharashtra, there is a Mahayuti government i.e. Shiv Sena, BJP and NCP Ajit Pawar group. Dealing with anti-incumbency and division of votes among 6 big parties will be a big challenge for the party.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, out of 48 seats in Maharashtra, India alliance got 30 and NDA got 17 seats. BJP got 9, Shiv Sena got 7 and NCP got only 1 seat. BJP lost 23 seats. NDA got 41 seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. In 2014, this figure was 42. That is, less than half.
According to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, BJP will be reduced to around 60 seats. A survey of the opposition alliance has predicted that MVA i.e. Mahavikas Aghadi will get 160 seats out of 288 seats in the state. The Maratha movement is the biggest challenge for the BJP. Apart from this, after the rift in Shiv Sena and NCP, people have sympathy with Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar.

In 2019, there was a BJP-Shiv Sena alliance. BJP won 105 seats and Shiv Sena won 56 seats. NCP got 54 seats and Congress got 44 seats from the alliance. BJP-Shiv Sena would have easily come to power, but the alliance broke due to differences.
On 23 November 2019, Fadnavis took oath as Chief Minister and Ajit Pawar as Deputy Chief Minister. This was an early morning oath taking ceremony. But before the floor test, both resigned on 26 November 2019. On 28 November 2019, the Maha Vikas Aghadi of Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress came to power.
After this, there was a rebellion in Shiv Sena and NCP and 4 parties were formed. Sharad and Uddhav got an edge in the Lok Sabha elections. Assembly elections will be held in this background.
The political drama started again in Maharashtra
On 23 November 2019, early in the morning, Devendra Fadnavis took oath as Chief Minister and Ajit Pawar as Deputy Chief Minister. However, amid political turmoil, both resigned on 26 November 2019 before the floor test. Later on 28 November, Uddhav Thackeray formed the government with NCP and Congress. This alliance was called Maha Vikas Aghadi. Then there was a rebellion in Shiv Sena. The party was divided into two factions. The Election Commission considered Eknath Shinde’s faction as the real Shiv Sena. Eknath Shinde formed the government by forming an alliance with BJP. Devendra Fadnavis became Deputy CM. After this, Uddhav Thackeray’s Maha Vikas Aghadi government fell. In July 2023, there was a split in NCP. Ajit Pawar rebelled against his uncle Sharad Pawar and joined the Shinde-BJP government. He was made the second Deputy CM. Later, the Election Commission also considered Ajit Pawar’s faction as the real NCP.
Political equation of Jharkhand
The 32 seats of Santhal Pargana and Kolhan division are the biggest challenge for BJP
There is a Mahagathbandhan (grand alliance) government in Jharkhand, led by Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). It includes Congress, RJD and Left parties. To form the government in Jharkhand, BJP will have to focus on 32 seats of Santhal Pargana and Kolhan division.
Out of the 18 assembly seats in Santhal Pargana, BJP has only three seats right now. In the last election, BJP could not even open its account in the 14 assembly seats of Kolhan division. The then Chief Minister Raghuvar Das also had to face defeat from Jamshedpur East.
In January, Hemant Soren had to go to jail after resigning from the CM post in a corruption case. However, after getting bail, he came out and took back the CM post from Champai Soren in 156 days. After this Champai joined BJP. Champai, who was a companion of Shibu Soren in the Jharkhand movement, is also known as the Kolhan Tiger.
2024 election year:
Elections were held in 6 states including Lok Sabha
In 2024, assembly elections were held in 4 states – Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim along with Lok Sabha. BJP could not cross the majority mark alone in the Lok Sabha, but formed the government for the record third consecutive time on the strength of allies. Modi became the first non-Congress face to become PM for the third time.
At the same time, BJP formed the government with TDP in Andhra Pradesh. Chandrababu Naidu became the CM. For the first time in Odisha, BJP formed the government with full majority under the leadership of Mohan Chandra Majhi. In Arunachal, BJP formed the government for the third consecutive time. In Sikkim, the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) formed the government.
In Haryana, BJP is going to form the government for the record third time by winning 48 seats. So far no political party has formed the government in the state for three consecutive times. In the elections held after 10 years in Jammu and Kashmir, the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference and Congress alliance are going to form the government.
The Congress-NC alliance won 48 seats. BJP won 29 seats. 15 years ago in 2009 also, the Congress and NC alliance government was formed. Then Omar was 38 years old and became the youngest Chief Minister of the state.

When is the by-election to be held?
elections will be held on 13 November on 47 assembly seats and Wayanad Lok Sabha seat of Kerala. Wayanad seat has fallen vacant due to Rahul Gandhi’s resignation. Rahul Gandhi is currently an MP from Rae Bareli. At the same time, by-elections will be held on 20 November on Kedarnath assembly seat of Uttarakhand and Nanded Lok Sabha seat of Maharashtra. Nanded seat of Maharashtra has fallen vacant due to the death of Congress MP Vasantrao Chavan. The results of the by-election will also come on 23 November.
