Battle of Papers, White vs Black: In the lead-up to the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the political landscape is painted with a symbolic color code: black versus white. The BJP-led Centre has unveiled a white paper, critiquing the economic management of the previous UPA government over 10 years. In response, the Congress has swiftly countered with a “black paper.”

The Congress, led by national president Mallikarjun Kharge, unveiled its document titled ’10 Saal Anyay Kaal 2014 to 2024′. This “black paper” meticulously outlines statistics detailing the downturn experienced across various sectors under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. The party highlights issues such as rampant unemployment, economic blunders, flaws in the Goods and Services Tax implementation, job losses, farmer distress, corporate favoritism, and crime against women, among others.

Interestingly, both papers were released on the day Prime Minister Modi bid farewell to his predecessor, Manmohan Singh, upon his retirement from the Rajya Sabha. Responding to the black paper, Prime Minister Modi remarked that it was akin to a protective charm for his government, aiming to ward off harm. He also referenced a recent “black dress protest” by the INDIA bloc.

The white paper, however, serves as a scathing critique of the former prime minister, portraying the economy as languishing under his leadership, despite his prominent background as an economist. Furthermore, it launches attacks on former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, alleging corruption within her family that purportedly benefited ministers at the expense of the common people.

As the focus and narrative for the 2024 elections center around the economy and corruption, Prime Minister Modi aims to counter the opposition’s claims that issues like the Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir serve as diversion tactics from economic concerns. Additionally, the contrasting performance over a span of 10 years serves as a significant matrix for comparison.

In a previous interview, PM Modi had stated that he avoided highlighting economic distress upon assuming office to avoid discouraging investors. However, India’s improved global standing has now shifted the narrative. The Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra is primarily focused on delivering justice to the poor and common people, emphasizing the BJP’s commitment to equitable governance.

Kharge, during the release of the black paper, questioned the PM’s silence on the issues raised by the opposition and challenged him to address the current situation instead of blaming historical figures like Nehru.

As the government seeks to discredit the Congress with the white paper, the opposition looks for a glimmer of hope through the black paper, both vying to shape the narrative leading up to the elections.

Highlights –

  1. Color Symbolism: The political discourse is symbolized by a color code with the BJP’s white paper versus the Congress’s black paper, setting the stage for contrasting narratives ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
  2. Contentious Issues: Both papers delve into contentious issues such as unemployment, economic setbacks, GST implementation flaws, job losses, farmer distress, corporate favoritism, and crime against women, providing statistics and analysis to support their respective arguments.
  3. Scathing Critique: The white paper serves as a scathing critique of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s administration, portraying the economy as stagnant despite his background as an economist, while also attacking Sonia Gandhi for alleged corruption within her family.
  4. Election Strategy: Prime Minister Modi aims to steer the election narrative towards economic performance and corruption, countering opposition claims that other issues like the Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir serve as diversions from economic concerns, using the contrasting 10-year performance as a key comparison metric.
  5. Narrative Duel: With the government seeking to discredit the Congress using the white paper and the opposition looking for a ray of hope through their black paper, both parties engage in a battle to shape the narrative leading up to the elections, highlighting contrasting visions for governance and economic management.
