Congress Gujarat Convention 2025: After a gap of 64 years, the Congress party is making a dramatic return to Gujarat with a high-profile National Convention in Ahmedabad on April 8 and 9, 2025. Gujarat — a land historically associated with Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel, and more recently with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s political rise — has become the center stage of Congress’ strategy to regain lost ground. The question echoing across political circles: Can the Congress disrupt the ‘Modi Model’ from its very birthplace?

Congress Gujarat Convention: The two-day convention is being held at politically and symbolically significant locations. Day one kicks off at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Memorial with a Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, followed by a prayer meeting at Sabarmati Ashram — the cradle of Gandhi’s non-violent movement.

The final day will witness a grand session on the iconic Sabarmati Riverfront with all Pradesh Congress Committee presidents, chief ministers from Congress-ruled states, and top national leadership including Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi in attendance.

Why Gujarat? Why Now?

Congress Gujarat Convention: This convention is not just a regular political gathering — it is timed with purpose. The year 2025 marks the 100th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi becoming the Congress President and also commemorates the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Patel. Congress is using this moment to reclaim the legacy of both leaders, which it believes has been politically hijacked by the BJP in recent decades.

Furthermore, this event is designed to send a direct message — the Congress is not giving up on Gujarat, a state that was once its bastion. In fact, this convention serves as the starting point of its campaign for the 2027 Gujarat Assembly Elections. The goal is clear: rebuild the party’s organisational structure, energize the cadre, and challenge the BJP’s unbroken 30-year reign.

Breaking the Gujarat Model

The BJP has marketed the “Gujarat Model” as the gold standard of governance — efficient administration, economic growth, and communal harmony. This model was a major reason for the meteoric rise of Narendra Modi to national power in 2014. It became the foundation for national campaigns such as ‘Make in India’, ‘Ease of Doing Business’, and the famous slogan “Modi Hai Toh Mumkin Hai”.

However, Congress believes that the sheen of this model is wearing off. While BJP boasts of high growth and investment, Congress is pushing the narrative that there’s a disconnect between the model and the ground realities. Issues such as unemployment, rising inflation, farmer distress, and weakening public infrastructure are being cited as signs of a model that benefits the few while ignoring the many.

By launching a counter-narrative from the very land where the Gujarat model began, Congress hopes to expose its limitations and create a new template for the future — one that focuses on inclusivity, grassroots empowerment, and transparent governance.

Congress’ Diminished Footprint in Gujarat

The journey back to relevance in Gujarat won’t be easy for Congress. Once a dominant force in the state, Congress has seen a dramatic decline in electoral fortunes. It won a record 149 seats in 1985 but has been losing ground steadily ever since.

In the 2022 Assembly Elections, BJP won a historic 156 out of 182 seats. Congress was reduced to a mere 17 seats. AAP’s debut further eroded Congress’ base by taking away 13% of its vote share. Today, BJP holds 161 seats while Congress has shrunk to just 12.

Even in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, despite an alliance with AAP, Congress could secure only one seat out of 26. BJP’s vote share soared above 61%, while Congress managed just over 31%. A slight silver lining: Congress led in 20 assembly segments, indicating minor gains since 2022.

However, the 2025 municipal elections once again highlighted the party’s weakening grip. BJP swept 60 out of 68 municipalities; Congress retained only one. This reflects a critical erosion of grassroots strength and organisational structure.

Rahul Gandhi’s Stern Message

The Congress high command, especially Rahul Gandhi, is acutely aware of internal challenges. Recently, in a closed-door meeting in Ahmedabad, Rahul Gandhi bluntly addressed the rift within the Gujarat unit. He spoke of a dual leadership culture — one genuinely rooted in Congress ideology and close to the public, and another, disconnected and allegedly working in tandem with BJP interests.

Rahul made it clear that cleanup is underway. He signaled that if necessary, the party is prepared to purge even 10, 20, or 40 leaders to rebuild from scratch. His message: revive the Congress with ideological commitment and loyalty or step aside.

Can Congress Capitalize on Gujarat’s Contradictions?

Congress Gujarat Convention: Though BJP projects Gujarat as a shining example, critics argue that beneath the gloss lies a host of issues. From agrarian distress to youth unemployment and infrastructural gaps in semi-urban regions, there is simmering discontent that Congress believes can be tapped into.

For Congress, the path to revival lies not just in symbolism but in deep grassroots work. The new generation — particularly youth and women — remain largely disconnected from the Congress legacy. BJP’s 30-year dominance means many have never seen Congress governance. This demographic can be Congress’ game-changer if reached with a resonant message and genuine intent.

Moreover, internal restructuring is key. Congress needs local leaders who are fighters, not fence-sitters. The organisation must rebuild from the booth level upwards. Without a strong and unified organisational base, even the best strategies will fall flat.

Beyond Gujarat: A National Message

Congress Gujarat Convention: Though rooted in Gujarat, this convention has national undertones. By taking the battle to BJP’s core, Congress wants to send a loud signal: it is still in the fight. A well-executed Gujarat model 2.0 from the Congress camp can set the stage for national revival.

However, grand conventions alone won’t shake the Modi model. Congress must walk the talk — convert resolutions into action, strategies into campaigns, and symbolism into substance. That’s where BJP has consistently outplayed its rivals — not just in planning but in disciplined execution.

ByNews-Views: Can the Fort Be Breached?

Congress Gujarat Convention: The Congress National Convention in Gujarat is not just a political spectacle; it’s a strategic gamble. The symbolism is strong, the message is loud, but the road ahead remains steep.

To breach BJP’s Gujarat fortress, Congress must go beyond speeches and photo-ops. It must invest in people, processes, and presence. Gujarat may well be the toughest battlefield, but if Congress can revive here, it can reignite across the nation.

This is a defining moment — not just for Gujarat Congress but for the party’s future. Whether it becomes a turning point or just another chapter will depend entirely on what Congress does after the cameras are gone.
