Kejriwal’s Delhi Defeat: The collapse of Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) stronghold in Delhi marks a significant moment in Indian politics. The stunning defeat of Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia in their own constituencies has raised questions about the party’s survival. With Kejriwal’s political future in jeopardy, rumors of potential jail time for him and other senior leaders are gaining momentum. Let’s delve into what this defeat could mean for AAP and its leadership.

AAP’s Foundation in Delhi Shakes, Threatening Party Unity

AAP’s rise to power began in Delhi in 2013, capturing 28 seats in its debut election. By 2015, the party’s success skyrocketed with a record-breaking win of 67 out of 70 seats. Even in 2020, AAP retained dominance by securing 62 seats.

Now, losing Delhi—a state that has been its political epicenter—spells trouble for AAP. With its headquarters and primary base in the national capital, Delhi’s loss could be the beginning of an internal collapse.

Many of AAP’s members are not career politicians but activists, social workers, or individuals aligned with the party’s earlier ideals of clean politics. Losing power could lead to a mass exodus of such members. In recent months, 10 sitting MLAs from AAP have already defected to BJP.

The party may splinter further, as leaders who joined from other parties may return to their original affiliations. Additionally, AAP’s structure could fracture into multiple factions, leading to chaos. The impact of Delhi’s loss will not remain isolated—it is likely to ripple into Punjab and Gujarat, where AAP has been striving to expand its base.

Arvind Kejriwal’s Leadership Faces Its Biggest Test

Arvind Kejriwal has always been the face and driving force of AAP. From his anti-corruption movement days to becoming Delhi’s Chief Minister in 2013, Kejriwal’s authority within the party has been undisputed.

However, this electoral defeat is a direct blow to his image. Known for his aggressive and decisive leadership style, Kejriwal has often silenced dissenting voices within AAP. Leaders like Yogendra Yadav, Prashant Bhushan, and Kumar Vishwas were either sidelined or forced to leave for opposing his methods.

Now, the blame for this defeat falls squarely on Kejriwal’s shoulders. His opponents within the party may finally find a chance to challenge his supremacy, which was previously untouchable. This loss could weaken his influence and raise questions about whether he should continue as the party’s convener.

Kejriwal’s statement after being released from jail in September 2024—“prison bars cannot reduce my morale”—may no longer resonate with the public. The defeat has damaged his credibility, and his political career hangs in the balance.

BJP’s Mission: Eliminate AAP Completely

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been relentless in its efforts to dismantle AAP. From targeting its leaders with allegations of corruption to orchestrating defections, BJP has viewed AAP as a political irritant, particularly in Delhi and Punjab.

Now that AAP has lost Delhi, BJP is likely to double down on its strategies to eliminate the party entirely. Investigations into the liquor policy scam involving Kejriwal, Sisodia, and others are expected to intensify. BJP’s narrative of “cleaning corruption” has been instrumental in turning public sentiment against AAP.

With its central leadership aggressively pursuing legal and political actions against AAP, the party’s survival is at stake. Losing Delhi has weakened AAP’s ability to resist BJP’s onslaught, and the coming months may see an escalation of attacks.

Is Jail Awaiting Kejriwal Again?

The specter of jail looms large over Kejriwal and his close associates. Following the Delhi elections, investigations into AAP’s alleged financial irregularities have already picked up pace. Recently, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) conducted raids at Kejriwal’s residence, intensifying fears of legal trouble.

The BJP government at the center has repeatedly signaled its intent to take strong action against AAP’s leadership. During a public rally in Dwarka, PM Modi hinted at a “major crackdown on corruption” post-elections. Many believe this was directed at AAP leaders, who are already embroiled in various cases.

The cases related to the liquor policy scam are expected to gain momentum, with Kejriwal, Sisodia, Sanjay Singh, and Satyendar Jain being the prime targets. Losing Delhi has only emboldened BJP to act more aggressively, increasing the chances of Kejriwal facing jail time again.

AAP Shifts Focus to Punjab and Gujarat

With Delhi lost, AAP’s leadership will now turn its attention to retaining Punjab, its second political stronghold. The party had swept Punjab in 2022, forming the government by leveraging its “Delhi model.” However, losing Delhi will severely affect the morale of both leaders and workers in Punjab.

Despite BJP’s limited presence in Punjab (currently holding two seats), its ability to make rapid gains cannot be underestimated. AAP will have to work tirelessly to counter BJP’s growing influence in the state.

After stabilizing Punjab, AAP is likely to increase its focus on Gujarat, where it had shown signs of growth in the last elections. The party had won five seats and stood second on 35 others. Kejriwal’s leadership will be tested once again as the party attempts to sustain and grow its presence in these states.

What Lies Ahead for AAP?

The loss of Delhi has thrown AAP into a political crisis. The party must now strategize to retain its relevance in Indian politics. Potential moves include restructuring the leadership and bringing fresh faces to the forefront. Kejriwal may step back as convener, allowing leaders like Manish Sisodia, Sanjay Singh, or Saurabh Bhardwaj to take charge.

For AAP, the next two years will be critical. The party must rebuild its organizational strength and regain public trust in Punjab and Gujarat while preparing for the 2027 Delhi assembly elections. Whether AAP survives or crumbles under the weight of its setbacks depends on how effectively it navigates this tumultuous phase.

A Turning Point for AAP?

AAP’s defeat in Delhi has marked a turning point in its political journey. Arvind Kejriwal, once the poster boy of anti-corruption politics, now faces the risk of jail and diminishing authority. The party’s unity, survival, and future growth are under threat as BJP intensifies its efforts to eliminate AAP as a political force.

The road ahead for AAP is fraught with challenges, but it is also an opportunity to rebuild and refocus its agenda. Whether it can rise from the ashes or succumb to internal and external pressures remains to be seen.
