Why Don't Uttar Pradesh give importance to any party? Its mood Swings after every two elections| Know the Reason

Elections 2024 Results: A few months ago, the grand consecration of the Ram temple took place in Ayodhya. The politics around which the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had been doing for the last two and a half decades. BJP has lost the Faizabad parliamentary seat there. The mood of Banaras was visible that where the Kashi Vishwanath temple and corridor were built with great enthusiasm, the votes received by Prime Minister Narendra Modi decreased there. This is the UP which sounded the bugle to reduce BJP to half the seats in this election as compared to five years ago.

This is UP, which is also the most vocal state of the country politically. Sometimes a lot is brewing in the political silence here and sometimes it openly gives its verdict in favour of a party. By the way, the political history of UP is that whichever party it gives a lot of seats and votes and puts it on the top, it also removes it.

This political attitude and mood of UP is not from today but from 1952 when Indian democracy started. Therefore, whichever parties consider UP to be with them and think that it is riding their wave now, then this immediately corrects their misconception.

At a time when Nehru was ruling the roost, Uttar Pradesh had given him a jolt. When other states of the country seemed to be standing with the Congress, even then UP had blown a different trumpet.

After the Emergency, if any state in the country showed the most anger against Indira Gandhi, it was Uttar Pradesh and when the same Indira was assassinated, this state also won record number of seats in the wave of sympathy. When the 2014 Lok Sabha elections were held, UP was the one that helped BJP win 71 seats and form the government at the Centre.

It is the history of Uttar Pradesh that it weighs the parties and then announces the results. It should be said that from Nehru to Modi, this state gave them a lot of respect but also gave them a lot of advice.

Let us see how UP has been changing its mood.

1952 Elections – The country had just got independence. There was a new zeal in the country. For the first time in 1952, elections were held in the country. The biggest state in terms of seats was Uttar Pradesh. Elections were held for 86 seats. Congress won 81 seats. No other party was even close to it. Nehru was the leader of the masses then.

1957 Elections – By the time the second Lok Sabha elections came, the winds of change had started to be seen in UP to some extent. This time, in one go, the public defeated Congress by 11 seats at a time when Nehru was still a huge craze in the whole country. Congress got 70 seats and Jansangh got 02 seats.

1962 Elections – After two elections, the electoral mood of UP had clearly changed. By the time the third Lok Sabha elections came, UP changed its political mood even more. If the country still seemed to be standing with the Congress, then the Congress seats in UP decreased further to 62 while the Jan Sangh got 07 seats.

1967 Elections – This election was different because after Nehru’s death, sympathy was seen for Congress and his daughter Indira Gandhi. This is why Congress won 73 out of 85 Lok Sabha seats. Also, Bharatiya Jansangh became stronger by winning 12 seats. This was enough to show that UP was also going with the political stream that was completely opposite to Congress.

1971 – This time Indira Gandhi had split the Congress and formed Congress S. So UP rejected the old Congress and stood with Indira Gandhi’s new Congress. It gave a whopping 73 seats to Indira’s Congress. Jansangh got 04 seats.

1977 – UP was seething with the imposition of emergency. There was a lot of anger over Indira Gandhi’s prime ministership. This time UP was ready to settle scores with the excesses committed by Indira. And it settled scores in such a way that everyone was surprised. For the first time after independence, Congress did not get any seat, it could not even open its account. The new Janata Party formed just before the elections won a total of 85 seats.

1980 – Due to its mistakes, the Janata Party fell in just two and a half years and mid-term elections were held in the country. UP was again seen standing with Indira Gandhi. Out of 85 seats, Congress won 50 seats and Janata Party Secular won 29 seats.

1984 – After the assassination of Indira Gandhi, Uttar Pradesh was also not untouched by the sympathy wave. It won 83 out of 85 seats and BJP could not even open its account. Congress had not got such a massive victory even when it contested its first election during Nehru’s era.

1989 – This time the mood of UP had changed. If it had given Congress a sway five years ago, this time it completely brought it down. Congress got only 15 seats out of 85. BJP got 08 seats while the Janata Dal led by VP Singh won 54 seats.

1991 – For the first time, the state saw the rise of BJP. It won 51 seats for the first time and made its debut. This time Congress got only 05 seats, which would be called its poor performance. Janata Dal got 22 seats.

1996 – Congress was again confined to 05 seats while BJP won 52 seats. Samajwadi Party won 16 seats and BSP won 06 seats. But this election also showed that UP is now standing with a new kind of regional parties.

1998 – Congress did not get any seat. BJP got 57 seats. Samajwadi Party won 20 seats and BSP won 4 seats.

1999 – Congress increased its tally from zero to 10 and BJP got 29 seats, which means it lost 28 seats this time. Samajwadi Party was ahead this time with 35 seats. BSP got 14 seats.

2004 – For the first time after the formation of Uttarakhand, elections were held for 80 Lok Sabha seats in UP, in which Congress got 09 seats and BJP got 10. This time Samajwadi Party got 35 seats and BSP got 19 seats. If you see, this election is again showing that the political mood of the state has changed.

2009 – Congress performed better in UP and won 22 seats. This time the results were same for BJP i.e. it got 10 seats, Samajwadi Party got 22 seats and BSP got 20. But this was the last election in which Congress was able to reach double digits, after this this political party had to crave for seats in the state which had really given it so much respect.

2014 – This was the election that hoisted the flag of BJP in UP and sealed the political change in the country. Congress and other parties were wiped out to a large extent. BJP won 71 seats, Samajwadi Party got 05 seats and Congress got only two seats.
