Highest Paid MLAs: In India, politics is not just about power; it’s also about big money. Some states in the country offer jaw-dropping salaries and perks to their Chief Ministers, Ministers, and MLAs. Let’s dive into the top five states where public representatives earn huge sums of money.

1. Telangana – The Wealthy Leader’s Paradise

When it comes to the highest salaries for politicians, Telangana takes the crown. The Chief Minister earns a whopping Rs 4.10 lakh per month. This package includes a basic salary and a slew of allowances like housing, travel, vehicle, and security. Ministers in the state are not far behind, drawing salaries ranging from Rs 3 to 3.5 lakh per month.

The MLAs of Telangana receive around Rs 2.5 lakh every month. Their basic salary may be a modest Rs 20,000, but various allowances like area allowance (Rs 2.3 lakh annually), medical, and travel perks add to their income. Plus, they receive a development fund of Rs 3 crore annually for their constituencies.

2. Delhi – High Salaries Despite Being a Union Territory

Delhi may be a union territory, but the salaries here are no joke. The Chief Minister of Delhi takes home Rs 3.90 lakh per month, making it the second-highest salary in the country. Ministers earn around Rs 3 lakh per month, while MLAs get Rs 90,000 per month.

In 2023, the salary of Delhi MLAs was hiked by 66%, from Rs 54,000 to Rs 90,000. Besides, they enjoy benefits like a daily allowance of Rs 1,500 during sessions and free housing. They can also use an annual fund of Rs 4 crore for area development.

3. Uttar Pradesh – Big Salaries for the Largest State

Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state of India, has 403 MLAs. The Chief Minister earns Rs 3.65 lakh per month, making it the third-highest paying state in the country. Ministers earn between Rs 2 to 2.5 lakh, while the average salary of an MLA is around Rs 1.87 lakh per month.

This salary structure includes a basic salary of Rs 25,000, area allowance of Rs 50,000, medical allowance of Rs 30,000, and other perks. During assembly sessions, they receive Rs 2,000 per meeting. Additionally, MLAs are granted a development fund of Rs 7.5 crore over five years.

4. Maharashtra – Financial Powerhouse, Moderate Salaries

Despite being one of the richest states in India, Maharashtra’s salaries for politicians are comparatively moderate. The Chief Minister earns Rs 3.40 lakh per month, while ministers make between Rs 2.5 to 3 lakh per month. MLAs earn an average of Rs 1.60 lakh per month.

Their income structure includes basic salary, area allowance (Rs 50,000), travel, and medical allowances. MLAs in Maharashtra are allotted Rs 2 crore annually for area development and also enjoy benefits like free accommodation, car facilities, and pensions starting from Rs 30,000 depending on their tenure.

5. Karnataka – The Rising Star of Salary Hikes

Karnataka has recently made headlines for significantly increasing the salaries of its politicians. The Chief Minister’s salary jumped from a basic Rs 75,000 to around Rs 3 lakh per month, while ministers now earn between Rs 2 to 2.5 lakh monthly.

MLAs in Karnataka saw their salaries rise from Rs 40,000 to Rs 1.5 lakh per month. The pay structure includes an area allowance of Rs 25,000, travel allowance of Rs 35 per km, and a daily session allowance of Rs 2,500. Additionally, they receive a development fund of Rs 2 crore annually.
