Kachchatheevu Island Controversy: Kachchatheevu Island is situated between Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu, due to which politics is quite heated these days. Prime Minister Narendra Modi once again targeted the Congress and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin’s DMK on Monday (April 1, 2024) over the issue of giving Katchatheevu island to Sri Lanka . He said that the DMK did nothing to protect the interests of the people of Tamil Nadu.
PM Modi wrote on social media: “Apart from rhetoric, DMK has done nothing to protect the interests of Tamil Nadu. The new information coming out on Kachchativu has completely exposed the double standards of DMK.”
What did PM Modi say?
PM Modi further said, “Congress and DMK are family units. They only care that their own sons and daughters move forward. They don’t care about anyone else. Their indifference on Kachchativu has harmed the interests of our poor fishermen and especially the fisherwomen.”
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a rally in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh on Sunday (31 March) that Congress had cut off a part of Mother India by calling Kachchatheevu Island, which is very important from the security point of view, useless.
In fact, apart from PM Modi, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar also said that the issue of Kachchativu has not come up suddenly. It has been a live issue. It has also been debated in Parliament. He alleged that the Congress and DMK adopted such a stance on this issue as if they had no responsibility. The then Prime Ministers showed indifference towards the Indian territory. It seems that they did not care at all. Now we are looking for a solution to this.
In response to this, Congress MP Pramod Tiwari said on Monday (1 April) that BJP should first look into its own affairs.

At the same time, Congress MP Pramod Tiwari, while hitting back at the BJP-led central government, alleged that when will they give an answer to Bangladesh about 10,000 acres. He said, “The proceedings of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are witness to this. Recently, talks were held between India and Bangladesh. Did you (BJP) not hand over 17,000 acres of land to them in exchange for 7000 acres of land? When will you give an answer for these 10,000 acres? First look into your own affairs.”
I did not feel any pain for speaking against Tamil language: Pramod Tiwari
The Congress leader further said, “What happened in history, the public has given its answer in many elections. Today you are feeling pain for Tamil Nadu but when you used to speak against the Tamil language, you did not feel pain. You are worried about it at the time of elections. The day you get votes from there (Tamil Nadu), then you will not speak for 5 years.”
Congress gave away Kachchativu island to Sri Lanka: PM Modi
PM Modi said during a rally in Meerut that it is becoming clear how Congress gave away the Kachchativu island. People know that they cannot trust Congress now. In the last 75 years, Congress has weakened the unity, integrity and interests of India. The PM further said that there is Kachchativu island between Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu, which is very important from the security point of view. At the time of independence, it was an integral part of India.
The Prime Minister alleged that the Congress cut off a part of Mother India four-five decades ago by calling the island useless and separated it from India. Now when Indian fishermen go there to fish, they are arrested.
