Sushil Modi Death: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar Sushil Kumar Modi passed away. 72-year-old Sushil Modi was suffering from a serious disease of cancer for the last six months. He was undergoing treatment at AIIMS, Delhi. BJP had also included him among its star campaigners for the state. He was also nominated as a member of its election manifesto committee. Sushil Modi’s body will be brought to his residence in Rajendra Nagar, Patna on Tuesday morning.

Senior BJP leader Sushil Modi had informed about his cancer on 3 April. He had said, “I have been battling cancer for the last 6 months. Now I felt that the time has come to tell people. I will not be able to do anything in the Lok Sabha elections. I have told everything to the Prime Minister. I am always grateful and always dedicated to the country, Bihar and the party.”

Sushil Kumar Modi had said in his social media post on April 3, “I have been battling cancer for the last 6 months. Now I feel that the time has come to tell people. This is how PM Modi remembered Sushil Kumar Modi

Expressing grief, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “I am deeply saddened by the untimely demise of Sushil Modi ji, my valuable colleague in the party and my friend for decades. He has made an invaluable contribution to the rise and success of BJP in Bihar. By strongly opposing the Emergency, he had made a distinct identity for himself in student politics. He was known as a very hardworking and sociable MLA. He had a deep understanding of the issues related to politics. He also did a lot of commendable work as an administrator. His active role in the passage of GST will always be remembered. My condolences are with his family and supporters in this hour of grief. Om Shanti!”

His politics was dedicated to the poor – Amit Shah

Paying tribute, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said, “I am saddened by the news of the demise of our senior leader Sushil Kumar Modi ji. Today Bihar has lost a great pioneer of politics forever. From ABVP to BJP, Sushil ji adorned many important positions in the organization and the government. His politics was dedicated to the interests of the poor and the backward.”

I lost a true friend today – CM Nitish Kumar

Bihar CM Nitish Kumar expressed condolences on the demise of his former colleague. The CM said that he was a true soldier of the JP movement. He also worked with us for a long time as Deputy CM. The CM said, “Today I have lost a true friend and a hardworking politician.”

He was a combative person- Lalu Yadav

RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav remembered Sushil Kumar Modi. He said, “We received the very sad news of the demise of our friend brother Sushil Modi from the time of Patna University Students Union i.e. for the last 51-52 years. He was a combative, dedicated social political person. May God grant eternal peace to the departed soul and strength to the family to bear the grief.”

Babulal Marandi also expressed grief

Jharkhand BJP President Babulal Marandi said, “I am deeply saddened by the sad news of the demise of former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Shri Sushil Modi ji. The demise of Sushil Modi ji, who devoted his entire life to the country and social service, is an irreparable loss for the party and the political world. May God give peace to his soul and give strength to the bereaved family to bear this immense loss.”

Tejashwi Yadav said- I am extremely saddened

Former Bihar Deputy CM and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav also expressed condolences. He said, “I am extremely saddened to hear the news of the untimely demise of former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, our guardian, struggling and hardworking leader respected Shri Sushil Kumar Modi ji. May God give place to the departed soul in his lotus feet and provide strength to the family and well-wishers in this hour of grief. Om Shanti Om.”

BJP national J.P. Nadda wrote on X, “The news of the demise of senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar Shri Sushil Modi ji is extremely sad. From the Vidhyarthi Parishad till now, we have worked together for the organization for a long time. Sushil Modi ji’s entire life was dedicated to Bihar.”

BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad wrote on X, “The death of Bihar and BJP’s stalwart leader, former Deputy Chief Minister and my affectionate elder brother Sushil Modi is very sad. He played a very important role in fighting against corruption and expanding the BJP. I am deeply saddened by his untimely death. This was not the time for him to go. My very humble tribute!”

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary wrote on X, “Heartfelt tributes to former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar and former Rajya Sabha MP Shri Sushil Kumar Modi ji on his demise. This is an irreparable loss for Bihar BJP.”

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha wrote on Twitter, “Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar Shri Sushil Modi ji is no more among us. This is an irreparable loss for the entire BJP organisation family as well as countless workers like me. He will always be remembered for his organisational skills, administrative understanding and his deep knowledge on social political issues. May God grant eternal peace to the departed soul and strength to the family in this hour of grief.”

Shahnawaz Hussain wrote on Twitter, “Our leader, friend, elder brother respected Sushil Kumar Modi is no more in this world. There cannot be a bigger sorrow and pain for all of us members of the BJP family than this. Heartfelt tribute to him.”

Goodbye Sushil Modi: The journey from student leader to Deputy CM and Parliament

Sushil Modi was born on 5 January 1952 in Patna. He studied in St. Michael’s School, Patna. He got his BSc degree from BN College, Patna. After this, he joined the movement run by Jai Prakash Narayan.

Political journey of Sushil Kumar Modi

Sushil Modi’s political journey began as a student activist in Patna University. He became the general secretary of Patna University Students Union in 1973. He entered active politics in 1990, Sushil Modi became MLA for the first time from Patna Central constituency and was made the chief whip of the BJP Legislative Party. It is now known as Kumhar Assembly constituency.

Sushil Modi won the Bihar assembly elections thrice between 1990 and 2004. He was also the leader of the opposition in the Bihar assembly from 1996 to 2004. He was appointed the national vice-president of the BJP in 2003, a post he held till 2005.

He quit his Lok Sabha membership in 2005 and became a member of the Bihar Legislative Council, following which he was made deputy chief minister and Nitish Kumar became the chief minister. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2020 and retired earlier this year.

During his political career spanning more than three decades, Sushil Kumar Modi held various positions including MLA, MLC, Member of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. He was one of the few leaders of Bihar who was a member of all four houses including Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council. He also held the post of Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar from 2005 to 2013 and again from 2017 to 2020.

Sushil Modi had filed a PIL against Lalu Prasad Yadav in the Patna High Court, which later came to be known as the fodder scam. In 2004, he became a member of the Lok Sabha representing the constituency of Bhagalpur. After this, he continued to play an important role in Bihar politics. Modi was the Finance Minister and Deputy CM of Bihar.

Sushil Kumar Modi’s family includes his wife Professor JC George and two sons Utkarsh Tathagata and Akshay Amritanshu.
