Rahul Gandhi’s Decision: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge announced on Monday (June 17) that Rahul Gandhi will leave Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in Kerala and will remain an MP from Rae Bareli. Along with this, Kharge made a big announcement and said that Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi will contest from Wayanad.

It is worth noting that Rahul Gandhi won from Wayanad seat in Kerala and Rae Bareli seat in Uttar Pradesh in the Lok Sabha elections 2024. Legally, he had to leave one seat. Regarding this, Mallikarjun Kharge held a press conference on Monday. During this, he said that Rahul Gandhi will resign from Wayanad seat in Kerala.
Rahul Gandhi will remain MP from Rae Bareli
Mallikarjun Kharge said that it was decided in today’s meeting that Priyanka Gandhi will now contest from Wayanad seat in Kerala. He said that Rae Bareli seat has a lot of association with the Gandhi family. The people of Rae Bareli and the party people say that Rahul Gandhi should remain an MP from Rae Bareli seat only.
He said that Rahul Gandhi has received the love of the people of Wayanad seat too, but the law does not allow this. Due to which he will resign from the Wayanad seat and go to Parliament from Rae Bareli seat. He said that the people of Wayanad will now get the representation of Priyanka Gandhi instead of Rahul Gandhi.
What did Priyanka Gandhi say about contesting elections from Wayanad?
On this announcement, Priyanka Gandhi said that I am ready to represent Wayanad and I am very happy. She said that I will not let the people of Wayanad miss Rahul Gandhi. Priyanka Gandhi said that as Bhaiya (Rahul Gandhi) said that he will keep coming to Wayanad and I will also keep going to Rae Bareli.
Rahul Gandhi said that I have an emotional bond with the people of both Rae Bareli and Wayanad seats. He said that I was the MP of Wayanad for the last five years. The people there gave me a lot of love. I thank them for this. He said that this was not an easy decision for me.

1- Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat is the stronghold of the Gandhi family.
2- The head of the Gandhi family has always done politics from UP. Father Rajiv Gandhi contested elections from Amethi and great grandfather Jawaharlal Nehru from Allahabad. Mother Sonia, grandmother Indira and grandfather Feroze Gandhi were MPs from Rae Bareli seat.
3- The victory in Rae Bareli is big in the sense that the family has also regained the lost seat of Amethi.
4- While leaving the seat, Sonia Gandhi had told the people of Rae Bareli- I am handing over my son to you.
5- The family members also wanted Rahul to represent Rae Bareli.
6- Senior party leaders also advised that Rahul should keep the Rae Bareli seat with himself.
7- Sonia had explained to Rahul that UP is very important for Congress, hence he should keep Rae Bareli with him.
8- A member of the Congress Central Election Steering Committee had said that in the CEC meeting it was decided that Rahul should remain on the Rae Bareli seat.
No person can be a member of two Houses at the same time
Under the Constitution, no person can be a member of both Houses of Parliament or of Parliament and a state legislature at the same time. Nor can he represent more than one seat in one House. Under Article 101 (1) of the Constitution and Section 68 (1) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, if a public representative wins election from two seats, he has to vacate one seat within 14 days of the declaration of the result. If he does not vacate one seat, both his seats become vacant.

If there is no Speaker or Deputy Speaker in the formation of the new Parliament, then in such a situation the candidate submits his resignation to the Election Commission.
After this the Election Commission sends a copy of the resignation letter to the Secretary of the House.
