The wait of 17 years is over: India won the 2007 T20 World Cup, but since then Team India has never won the T20 World Cup. India did reach the final in 2014, but lost there. With this, India has also removed the tag of chokers that was attached to it for the last decade, as this is India’s first ICC title after the 2013 T20 World Cup.

Pandya won the match in the last over

The final of the T20 World Cup was played between India and South Africa in Barbados on Saturday. India won the toss and batted first and scored 176 runs for the loss of 7 wickets. After this, India restricted South Africa to 169 runs and won the trophy. South Africa had to score 16 runs in the last over to win. Hardik Pandya allowed the African team to score only 8 runs in this over. In this way, India won the match by 7 runs.

Earlier, India had given a target of 177

India won the toss and decided to bat first. However, Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant and Suryakumar Yadav could not play a big innings in this match. But after that, a 72-run partnership between Virat Kohli and Akshar Patel brought Team India back into the match. Akshar Patel scored 47 runs in 31 balls and Virat Kohli scored 76 runs in 59 balls. Shivam Dubey also helped India reach 176 runs by scoring 27 runs in 16 balls.

In the T20 World Cup final, India struggled after losing 3 wickets for 34 runs. Captain Rohit Sharma’s decision to bat first backfired initially. However, Akshar Patel’s 47 off 31 balls and Virat Kohli’s 76 off 59 balls stabilized the innings, leading India to 163 runs by the 19th over.

The partnership of de Kock and Stubbs changed the course of the match

The start was not good for South Africa as Reeza Hendricks and captain Aiden Markram were out after scoring four runs each. But from here Quinton de Kock and Tristan Stubbs made a comeback for South Africa by making a partnership of 68 runs. Stubbs scored 31 runs in 21 balls and de Kock scored 39 runs in 31 balls.

Heinrich Klaasen’s hard work went in vain

Heinrich Klaasen came to the crease for batting when South Africa’s score was 70 runs for 3 wickets. Klaasen started batting aggressively from here and he completed his half century in just 23 balls. He completed his fifty by hitting 2 fours and 5 sixes. Klaasen scored 52 runs in 27 balls. In the 15th over, Klaasen collected 24 runs from Akshar Patel from where the match seemed to have completely turned. But in the last 4 overs, India made a comeback on the strength of bowling.

The story changed in the last 4 overs

After 16 overs, South Africa had scored 151 runs for the loss of 4 wickets. South Africa had to score 26 runs to win in the last 4 overs. Hardik Pandya dismissed Klaasen on the very first ball of the 17th over. Only 6 runs were scored in the next 2 overs. Arshdeep Singh gave only 4 runs in the 19th over, which turned the match in India’s favor. In the last over, Hardik Pandya gave only 8 runs and ensured India’s victory by 7 runs.

Both the teams came out with this playing eleven

India Playing XI : Rohit Sharma (captain), Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant (wicketkeeper), Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dubey, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah

South Africa Playing XI : Quinton de Kock (wicketkeeper), Reeza Hendricks, Aiden Markram (captain), Tristan Stubbs, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Tabrez Shamsi.

Hero of victory

1. Axar Patel
Rohit Sharma sent Axar to bat before Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dubey. He was given the responsibility to take care of the wickets and Axar did just that. He came in after 3 wickets fell in the 5th over and got out in the 15th over, that too unfortunately. He ran for a run and got out. But before that he played an innings of 47 runs, hitting 4 sixes.

2. Hardik Pandya
scored only 5 runs in batting, but did wonders with the ball. He took the wicket of Heinrich Klaasen who had scored 52 runs in 27 balls. When 12 runs were needed in the last over, he dismissed David Miller and Kagiso Rabada.

3. Jasprit Bumrah
Jasprit took the first wicket of South Africa. He bowled out opener Reeza Hendricks in the second over. After this he returned in the 16th over, when the match was in South Africa’s favor. 30 runs were needed from 30 balls. Bumrah gave only 4 runs. After this he returned in the 18th over and gave only 2 runs. In this over he bowled out Marco Jansen, this was not just a bowled but a seal of victory. South Africa had lost 6 wickets.

4. Arshdeep Singh
dismissed captain Aiden Markram within the powerplay. Opener De Kock, who was moving towards a half-century, was dismissed. Arshdeep took 2 wickets for just 20 runs in 4 overs. De Kock’s wicket was a big success for India.

2 reasons for victory…

1. India’s 2 big partnerships
Virat Kohli came to bat in the first over and stayed till the 19th over. He scored 76 runs. Apart from this innings, there were two partnerships which took the score to 176. Kohli first shared a 72-run partnership with Axar Patel, then added 57 runs with Shivam Dubey.

2. Indian pacers turned the game around in the last 4 overs
Indian fast bowlers performed brilliantly in the match. The trio of Bumrah, Arshdeep and Pandya took 7 wickets together. These three did not let 30 runs be scored in the last 5 overs. Bumrah gave 6 runs in the next 2 overs and took a wicket. Hardik gave 12 runs in 2 overs and took 3 wickets. Arshdeep bowled one over and gave 4 runs. These overs won the match.

Virat Kohli said this while announcing his retirement

Virat Kohli announced retirement from T20 International, Virat said that now it is time for the next generation to take over. This was my last T20 World Cup, this is exactly what we wanted to achieve. One day you feel that you cannot score runs and it happens, God is great. Just a chance, now or never situation. This was my last T20 match playing for India. We wanted to lift that cup.

I have lifted the cup, it was an open secret. Nothing that I was going to declare even if I lost. It’s time for the next generation to take the T20 game forward. It has been a long wait for us, a wait to win an ICC tournament. You look at someone like Rohit, he has played 9 T20 World Cups and this is my sixth. He deserves it. It has been difficult to hold things (emotions) back and I think it will be understandable later.
