India vs Great Britain Hockey, Paris Olympics 2024: Indian hockey team reaches semi-finals, beats Great Britain 4-2 in shootout

India vs Great Britain Hockey, Paris Olympics 2024: The Indian hockey team has entered the semi-finals of the Paris Olympics. The Indian team defeated Britain in a shoot-off in the quarter-finals. Both teams were tied 1-1 till the stipulated time. After this, a shoot-off was played between the two teams. India defeated Britain 4-2 in the shoot-off. With this, India has reached the semi-finals for the second consecutive Olympics. The special thing about this match was that India played with 10 players for most of the match.

After independence, India’s first gold came after defeating Great Britain. In the Tokyo Olympics, India defeated Britain in the quarter-finals. That means history is in India’s favour. But the Indian team will have to keep in mind that Britain has defeated it twice this year.

The manner in which the Indian team defeated Australia and won the lost match against New Zealand in the Olympics is an indication that the Indian team is in great form. It is hoped that the Indian team will maintain the same form against Britain. India has reached the last eight by finishing second in Group B, while the British team finished third in Group A.

Great Britain made the first attack

Great Britain got a penalty corner in the fourth minute. India defended it, but Britain got a second penalty corner. The good thing is that India did not let a goal be scored on this too. Amit Rohidas made a brilliant save.

India retaliated and reached Britain’s D in the very next minute. Players gathered. However, India could not score a goal. The British team is also putting pressure on India. It retaliated again and again. It got the benefit of this in the 11th minute and got its third penalty corner. However, India wasted this opportunity again.

India got 3 penalty corners in 2 minutes

India got its first penalty corner in the 13th minute. It could not score a goal but it immediately got a second penalty corner. This time also Britain did not allow a goal on the penalty corner. Meanwhile, India has made its third penalty corner but could not score a goal. With this the first quarter final ended. In the first quarter, both the teams got 3-3 penalty corners.

Britain’s attack in the second quarter

Britain attacked in the first minute of the second quarter. It came close to scoring a goal. Sreejesh made a good save. Meanwhile, Britain demanded a penalty corner. When the umpire refused, a referral was taken. But Britain’s demand proved wrong. It neither got a PC nor did it have any referral left. It has lost the referral.

Amit Rohidas gets a red card 

India has suffered a big setback in the second quarter. India’s Amit Rohidas has been shown a red card. This means that he will no longer be able to play further in this match. India will now play the rest of the match with 10 players. Amit Rohidas’s stick hit British player Calnell. This is why he was shown a red card.

Britain got a penalty corner in the fifth minute of the second quarter. They could not score a goal. India retaliated and quickly took the ball and reached the opponent’s D. They also had other Indian players with them.

India scored the first goal of the match on the fourth penalty corner

India scored this goal on a penalty corner in the 22nd minute of the match. Captain Harmanpreet Singh capitalized on this opportunity and scored a brilliant goal to put India ahead 1-0. This is Harmanpreet’s seventh goal in the tournament.

Britain equalized in the 27th minute

Britain again got a PC in the 25th minute of the second quarter, but the Indian defenders did a good job. Britain could not score a goal. However, Britain kept the pressure on India. It got the benefit of this in the 27th minute. Britain equalized in the 27th minute of the match. This goal was scored by Lee Morton. After the second quarter, both teams are tied at 1-1.

Britain created pressure in the third quarter

Britain has been creating pressure since the beginning of the third quarter. It is getting the advantage of India having one less player. Britain came very close to scoring a goal in the second minute of this quarter. The ball hit the Indian goal post and went out.

India saved 3 penalty corners in the third quarter

India saved two penalty corners in the fifth minute of the third quarter. Goalkeeper Sreejesh is alert and is like a wall for India. However, Britain is maintaining possession of the ball. Most of the time the ball is around the Indian D. Britain took advantage of this and got the eighth penalty corner. Sreejesh once again made a brilliant save.

Sumit got a green card, went out for two minutes

In the last minute of the third quarter, Britain got a penalty corner. India took a referral and the penalty corner was cancelled. Meanwhile, Sumit has been given a green card. This means that he will return to the match only after two minutes. The third quarter is over and the score is tied at 1-1.

British player got green card at the beginning of the fourth quarter 

British player Shipperley got green card at the beginning of the fourth quarter. On the other hand, Sumit has returned to the field. In this way, after a long time, both India and Britain have equal number of players i.e. 10-10 players.

Shipperley returned to the field after two minutes. Once again, Britain now has 11 players. India had more possession of the ball in the fourth quarter as compared to the third quarter. In the third quarter, the ball remained in the Indian D most of the time. In the fourth quarter, India reached Britain’s D three to four times.

India won the shootout, scoring goals in all attempts

India has made it to the semi-finals by defeating Britain 4-2 in the penalty shootout. Harmanpreet Singh, Sukhjeet Singh, Lalit Upadhyay and Rajkumar Pal scored successful goals for India in the shootout. While for England, James Elvery scored in the first attempt and Jack Wallis in the second attempt. After that, Conor Williamson could not score in the third attempt and Philip Roper in the fourth attempt. Here India’s experienced goalkeeper made a brilliant save.

India made it to the podium at the Tokyo Olympics for the first time in 41 years since 1980. The Indian hockey team has won 12 Olympic medals, including eight gold.

Great Britain has not won an Olympic medal in hockey for the last 36 years. Britain won gold in 1988 by defeating West Germany 3-1 in Seoul. After that the team reached the top-4 in the London Olympics.

Britain was defeated in the quarter-finals of Tokyo Olympics

Earlier in the Olympic Games, India and Britain clashed in the quarter-finals of Tokyo-2020. Then the Indian team led by Manpreet Singh won 3-1.

Since then, both the teams have faced each other 4 times, all the matches were played in the FIH Pro-League 2023-24. In which India managed to win only once. There were two matches between the two teams in June, both were won by Britain.

India would like to gain an edge in every department

The highlight of India’s performance against Australia was the excellent coordination between the midfield and forward line led by Manpreet-Hardik. In the front line, Gurjant and Sukhjeet kept Australia’s defense under pressure with their play. The Indian team will once again try to gain an edge in every department against Britain.
