Fourth occasion of losing after scoring 550+ runs

This is only the fourth occasion in Test history when a team has lost despite scoring more than 550 runs in the first innings. The first such incident happened 130 years ago in 1894. At that time, the Australian team lost despite scoring 579 runs in the first innings. In 2003, Australia had lost to India after scoring 556 runs in the first innings. Similarly, the England team had lost in 2006 after declaring the first innings at 551 runs. But this is the first time a team has lost by an innings margin after scoring more than 500 runs.

Harry Brook was the player of the match. He played an innings of 317 runs.

Harry Brook Player of the Match

Though the heroes of England’s victory were cricketers Harry Brook and Joe Root, but the Player of the Match award went to Harry Brook. Harry Brook played a historic inning of 317 runs in 322 balls in the match. Joe Root scored 262 runs (375 balls). This was Root’s sixth double century. Harry Brook scored the first triple century of his career. This is also the biggest inning played in Multan. With this, Harry Brook snatched the title of Sultan of Multan from Virender Sehwag. Sehwag had played an inning of 309 runs on this same ground.

These bowlers dominated in bowling

Jack Leach achieved the most success in the first innings from England’s side. He took 3 wickets for 160 runs in 40 overs. Apart from him, Brydon Carse and Gus Atkinson managed to take 2-2 wickets respectively. Apart from these bowlers, Chris Woakes, Shoaib Bashir and Joe Root took 1-1 wickets.

The most successful bowlers from Pakistan were Naseem Shah and Saim Ayub. Both these bowlers got 2-2 wickets respectively. Apart from them, Shaheen Afridi, Amer Jamal and Salman Agha took 1-1 wickets.

In the second innings, Jack Leach took 4 wickets for England, while Brydon Carse and Gus Atkinson took 2-2 wickets and Chris Woakes took 1 wicket.

How Pakistan Lost: 4 Key Points…

1. 3 centuries in the first innings, Pakistan has the upper hand

Pakistan won the toss and decided to bat. The team scored 556 runs in the first innings. Abdullah Shafique (102 runs), captain Shan Masood (151 runs) and Salman Agha (104 runs) scored centuries. Saud Shakeel (82 runs) scored a half century. Jack Leach took 3 wickets for England. Gus Ecclestone and Brydon Carse got 2-2 wickets each.

2. England scored a record 823 runs, scored a triple and double century

In reply to the score of 556 runs, England declared the first innings at a record score of 823/7. In 24 years no team has been able to score such a score in the first innings. Due to this innings, England got a lead of 267 runs. For England, Joe Root scored 262 and Harry Brook scored 317 runs. Here the test match seemed to be heading towards a draw.

3. Pakistan lost 6 wickets in 37 overs on the fourth day

In the second innings, Pakistan’s batting collapsed in 37 overs on the fourth day. England declared the innings in the second session of the fourth day. After that, Pakistan lost 6 wickets in scoring 152 runs. Opener Abdullah Shafiq 0, Saim Ayub 25, Captain Shan Masood 11, Babar Azam 5 and Saud Shakeel were out after scoring 29 runs.

4. Salman and Jamal raised hopes, but could not avert defeat

On the last day of the match, Pakistan started playing with a score of 152/6. From here only two results were visible. Either Pakistan plays the whole day and draws the match, or England takes the last 4 wickets and wins the match.

In such a situation, Agha Salman and Aamir Jamal raised the hopes of Pakistani fans by playing half-century innings, but could not avoid the innings defeat. First Agha Salman was out after scoring 63 runs and then Aamir Jamal was out after scoring 55 runs. After the dismissal of these two, the entire team was all out in 6 overs.

Scored the most centuries but still lost

Pak also scored 3 centuries in the Multan Test and faced defeat. Earlier in 2022 also the same thing happened with Pakistan.
