Rohit Sharma retires from Test cricket: In a move that has left Indian cricket fans stunned, Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement from Test cricket, ending a decade-long journey in red-ball format. The decision comes just hours after media reports suggested that he could be removed from the Test captaincy for the upcoming England tour.

Rohit, who earlier stepped down from T20Is after India’s 2024 World Cup win, will continue to play ODIs, but his red-ball days are officially over.

“Hello, I want to tell everyone that I am retiring from Test cricket. It has been a proud moment for me to represent the country in red ball cricket. Thanks to everyone for the love and support. I will continue playing the ODI format.”

The timing of this announcement, just hours after the buzz about his possible removal as Test captain, has sparked speculation about whether the decision was personal—or prompted.

Rohit’s Test Career: A Mix of Highs and Missed Opportunities

Rohit made his Test debut in 2013 and went on to play 67 Tests, scoring 4301 runs at an average of 40.57. He smashed 12 Test centuries, many of them on home soil.

However, his overseas record remained a concern:

  • Australia: Average 24.38
  • South Africa: Average 16.63
  • England: Average 44.66 (with a century as opener in the last tour)

It wasn’t until 2021 that he cemented his spot as a permanent opener. In 2022, he was handed the captaincy. But a string of poor performances—particularly away from home—became hard to ignore.

Last Few Series: Rohit’s Form Took a Nosedive

Rohit’s last appearances in whites were far from ideal. He struggled in the Test series against New Zealand, averaging just 15.16, and fared even worse against Australia, managing a shocking 6.20.

Selectors were reportedly unhappy with his dipping form and were planning to move in a new direction for the England series. According to Express, the leadership group believed Rohit’s current form did not justify Test captaincy responsibilities.

The Changing Dynamics: Bumrah, Rahul, and Jaiswal in the Frame

With Rohit’s exit, the Indian Test side faces a leadership vacuum. While Jasprit Bumrah is the current vice-captain, his recent injuries may keep him out of action. KL Rahul, who has had mixed fortunes with the bat, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, the rising star, are now likely to step up as openers in England.

Notably, in the last Australia tour, Rohit didn’t even start as an opener. Jaiswal and KL Rahul opened, while Rohit batted in the middle order. India lost two matches under his leadership, raising eyebrows about his impact as captain overseas.

Rohit Wanted to Continue as Captain

In a recent podcast with former Australian skipper Michael Clarke, Rohit had clearly expressed his willingness to lead India in the Test format. He even sounded excited about leading the fiery pace trio of Bumrah, Shami, and Siraj in English conditions.

This sudden exit, then, hints at a shift after internal discussions—possibly with the selectors—who may have made it clear that his place was no longer guaranteed.

Gambhir’s Statement: Hint of Change Coming?

India’s newly appointed head coach Gautam Gambhir, speaking at ABP News’ ‘India at 2047’ summit on May 6, had subtly hinted at the change. He said:

“It’s not my job to select the team. Coaches only decide the playing-11. Final squad decisions rest with the selection committee.”

His words added fuel to the rumors of a major shake-up ahead of the England series.

Legacy and Future: Rohit’s White-Ball Impact Continues

This isn’t the end of Rohit Sharma’s international journey. He remains an integral part of India’s ODI squad and will likely lead the team in the upcoming ICC tournaments. Having already won the 2024 T20 World Cup as captain and being the top scorer in that format, Rohit now shifts focus to 50-over cricket.

His leadership in the ODI setup, especially with the Champions Trophy 2025 around the corner, will be crucial.

Who Next? The Test Captaincy Conundrum

With Virat Kohli having quit the Test captaincy three years ago and Bumrah’s fitness in question, the next captain for the England tour remains a mystery. KL Rahul is a contender, but many believe a fresh start with someone like Shubman Gill or even Ravindra Jadeja could be on the cards.

Rohit Sharma’s Test retirement marks the end of an era—an era filled with sublime strokeplay, but also some unfulfilled promise in overseas conditions. It’s a bold move, and one that could reshape India’s red-ball future.

As the team looks ahead to England, the search for a bold, consistent Test leader has officially begun.
