This announcement has been made by the Delhi government at a time when the pollution level in Delhi remains at dangerous levels for the fifth consecutive day. This announcement was made a few hours after the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) implemented stringent pollution control measures for Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) under the fourth phase of the Phased Response Action Plan (GRAP).

The fourth phase of GRAP-4 has come into effect from 8 am on Monday. Let us tell you that Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) had reached the ‘severe’ category on Sunday. The AQI in Delhi was recorded at 441 at 4 pm, which increased to 457 by 7 pm due to adverse weather.

Temperature higher than normal

Delhi experienced a relatively colder Sunday and the mercury dropped to 27.2 degrees Celsius, which is the lowest temperature of this season. The minimum temperature was recorded at 15.9 degrees, which is 3 degrees above the season’s average. The Meteorological Department said that due to fog at 8:30 am, the visibility at Safdarjung was reduced to 300 meters.

Supreme Court Warns Delhi Govt: No Lifting Restrictions Without Approval!

The Supreme Court has sought a response from the Central Government regarding air pollution in Delhi. A bench of Justice Abhay S Oka and Justice Augustine George Masih on Monday asked the Central Government, ‘When the Air Quality Index (AQI) reached between 300 and 400, why was there a delay of three days in implementing Stage 3 restrictions? You tell us the guidelines.’

The central government said that now the situation has arisen to implement stage 4 restrictions. On this the court said, ‘Tell us how the Delhi government will implement it. We are making it clear here that you will not go below stage 4 without our permission. Even if the AQI falls below 300.’

GRAP is imposed when AQI crosses 400

It is divided into 4 categories to check the level of air pollution. Standards and measures are fixed for each level. This is called Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). Under its 4 categories, the government imposes restrictions and issues measures to reduce pollution.

Stages of Grape

  • Stage I ‘Poor’ (AQI 201-300)
  • Stage II ‘very poor’ (AQI 301-400)
  • Stage III ‘Severe’ (AQI 401-450)
  • Stage IV ‘Severe Plus’ (AQI >450)
