Qatar Dahra Global Case: In a major relief to 8 former Indian sailors sentenced to death in Qatar, the sentence was stayed on Thursday (December 28). Regarding this, the Government of India said that we always stand with the families of eight people. Whereas BJP called it a victory of Modi government, Congress expressed happiness over it.

This is being seen as a diplomatic victory for India as PM Modi had met with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani on December 1 on the sidelines of the COP 28 summit in Dubai. This decision came after the meeting of the two leaders. PM Modi and Bin Hamad Al-Thani had said that there was a discussion between them regarding the welfare of the Indian community.

What did the Ministry of External Affairs say?

The Ministry of External Affairs said, ”We noted today’s decision of the Court of Appeal of Qatar in the Dahara Global case, In which the punishment has been reduced. Our Ambassador and other officials were present in the court today along with the family members. We have stood by him since the beginning of the case and we will continue to provide him all consular and legal assistance. We will also continue to raise this matter with the Qatari authorities.

BJP called it a victory for Modi government

BJP said that it is a victory for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign policy. BJP’s national general secretary Tarun Chugh said on social media, ‘Relieving the death sentence of 8 former Indian Navy personnel in Qatar is a victory for the diplomatic efforts of the country’s PM Narendra Modi’s foreign policy.

This news has once again made it clear that the entire world accepts the strength of India’s foreign policy under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

What did Congress say?
Congress also expressed happiness over the decision. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh posted on social media The entire country is feeling relieved by this decision and Congress is also involved in it. Although details are awaited, we express hope that the prison sentence imposed in lieu of death sentence will be revoked and the officers will be freed.”

The Indian National Congress shares its immediate relief along with the entire nation that the Court of Appeals in Qatar has decided not to go ahead with the death penalty on 8 former Indian Navy officers. While fuller details are awaited we express the hope that even the jail…

Who said what?
Former Navy spokesperson DK Sharma said that this is good news, but only the first step. Our aim should be to repatriate all eight Indians. We are expecting the same. Foreign affairs expert Sushant Sarin said that Qatar knows that it cannot impose death penalty.

Speaking to news agency ANI, Sarin said, ‘I do not consider this a diplomatic victory. This is a victory for diplomacy. I am saying the victory of diplomacy because the Indian government made all efforts.

A conversation also took place with the government of Qatar. Qatar also knew that if it imposed the death penalty, the relations between the two countries could have been affected.

What is the matter?
Eight Indians working at Al Dahra Global Technology based in Qatar were detained in August in a case of alleged espionage. All were sentenced to death on 26 October. However, Qatar has not yet said anything officially regarding the allegations.

Expressing surprise at this decision, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs had approached the court located in Qatar.
