The new bill will increase the price of these items
This protest in Kenya started when the MPs voted on a bill proposing a new tax. The new tax also includes ‘eco-levy’, which will increase the price of items like sanitary pads and diapers. After the protest intensified, the proposal to impose tax on ‘bread’ was removed, but the protesters are still demanding not to pass the new bill.
Human Rights Commission took cognizance of the firing
Kenya’s Human Rights Commission on Tuesday shared a video of firing on protesters and said that these officers will be held responsible. The Human Rights Commission has posted against President William Ruto on ‘X’. The commission wrote, ‘The world is watching you moving towards tyranny, democracy has been attacked under your government. All those directly or indirectly involved in firing on protesters should be held accountable.’
ADVISORY FOR INDIAN NATIONALS IN KENYA
India has advised its citizens in Kenya to exercise utmost caution and restrict non-essential movement amid violent protests in the East African nation against the government’s proposed tax hikes.
“In view of the prevailing tense situation, all Indians in Kenya are advised to exercise utmost caution, restrict non-essential movement and avoid the areas affected by the protests and violence till the situation clears up,” the Indian consulate in Kenya said in an advisory posted on social media platform X.
