America: A major accident took place in Baltimore, America on Tuesday morning (local time). A major bridge collapsed after a container ship hit it. In this accident, many vehicles fell into the river below. Meanwhile, rescue workers said that they are searching for at least seven people in the water.
According to a video posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, the ship appears to have collided with a support of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing the bridge to break in several places and fall into the water. The impact caused the ship to catch fire and it appears to have sunk.
“This is a serious emergency. Right now our focus is on trying to rescue and recover these people,” Baltimore Fire Department Communications Director Kevin Cartwright told The Associated Press. He said it appeared that some items were hanging from the bridge.
Cartwright said emergency responders were searching for at least seven people who were believed to have fallen into the water. He said agencies received 911 calls about 1:30 a.m. (local time) reporting that a ship heading from Baltimore had struck a pillar on the bridge. Several vehicles were on the bridge at the time, including a trailer truck.
The bridge over the Patapsco River opened in 1977 and was a vital link to the city, which is a hub of shipping on the East Coast with the Port of Baltimore. It is named after the author of ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’.
