CJI Chandrachud on CBI: Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Monday (April 1, 2024) gave a big advice to the country’s premier investigating agencies. He said that the country’s premier investigating agencies should focus only on cases that involve national security and crimes against the nation.
Chief Justice Chandrachud, who arrived to deliver the 20th DP Kohli Memorial Lecture on the occasion of CBI Foundation Day, also talked about the increasing crime due to technology, which is creating complex challenges for the investigating agency.

This challenge was told in front of CBI
Justice Chandrachud said, “The CBI is being asked to investigate a variety of criminal cases beyond its role as an anti-corruption investigating agency. This is posing a big challenge for the CBI to live up to its motto.” The CJI further said, “I think we have expanded the premier investigating agencies too little. They should focus only on those that are related to national security and economic crimes against the country.”
Emphasis on greater use of technology
During this time, DY Chandrachud proposed to digitize the investigation process from filing FIR to solving the problem. He said that it is important to take advantage of technology to reduce the delay caused by the high number of cases. CJI Chandrachud further said that a delicate balance is maintained between search, seizure powers and personal privacy rights. This is the cornerstone of a fair and just society. He also emphasized the need to maintain due process at the core of this balance.
Appreciation for changing the laws of British period
DY Chandrachud praised the new criminal laws passed by the Central Government to replace the British-era laws and called it an important step towards modernization of the justice system. He said that the Indian Justice Code (BNS), Indian Civil Protection Code (BNSS) and Indian Evidence Act (BSA) provide a comprehensive approach to ensure seamless flow. They aim to facilitate better coordination and cooperation between stakeholders involved in the investigation and judicial processes.
