New Delhi Stampede: How Did This Disaster Unfold?

Eyewitnesses and official reports reveal that the crowd at New Delhi Railway Station had been swelling since 6 PM due to multiple trains heading towards Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh Mela. Despite clear signs of a dangerous situation, the railways continued issuing nearly 1,500 tickets per hour for Prayagraj-bound trains, far exceeding the seating capacity of the available trains.

By 9:26 PM, the situation turned catastrophic when an announcement led to confusion, causing thousands to rush toward Platform 16, triggering a stampede on the foot-over bridge.

Shockingly, even after bodies started arriving at hospitals by 10:30 PM, Northern Railway dismissed the incident as a mere rumor at 11:11 PM. It wasn’t until past midnight that the government acknowledged the tragedy.

New Delhi Stampede: The 3 Fatal Blunders That Led to 18 Deaths

1. Overcrowding Due to Reckless Ticket Sales

  • On February 15, five major Prayagraj-bound trains were scheduled:
    • Prayagraj Express
    • Prayagraj Special Train
    • Magadh Express
    • Swatantrata Senani Express
    • Bhubaneswar Rajdhani Express
  • Three of these trains were delayed, leading to thousands of stranded passengers waiting on platforms 12, 13, and 14.
  • Shockingly, the railways issued 1,500 tickets per hour for Prayagraj, despite having only 900 unreserved seats available in total.
  • This reckless mismanagement created a suffocating crowd, with passengers crammed together, struggling for space.

2. Zero Crowd Control & Security Failure

  • Witnesses, including Indian Air Force soldier Ajeet, reported that exiting the metro station alone took over an hour, indicating extreme congestion.
  • Porter Sugan Lal Meena, who has worked at the station for 46 years, stated, “I have never seen so many people at one time.”
  • Despite clear signs of overcrowding, hardly any RPF personnel were deployed.
  • There was no structured crowd control strategy, making it impossible to manage the growing chaos.

3. Confusing Announcements & Last-Minute Panic

  • Two trains had similar names – Prayagraj Express and Prayagraj Special.
  • A last-minute announcement redirected the Prayagraj Special Train from Platform 12 to Platform 16, creating panic among passengers.
  • Thousands rushed from one platform to another, causing a deadly stampede on the foot-over bridge.
  • No emergency response was in place, worsening the situation.

Govt’s Denial: Did They Try to Hide the Deaths?

Timeline of Govt Response (or Lack of It!)

  • 10:48 PM – Delhi Fire Services reported an emergency at the railway station.
  • 11:11 PM – Northern Railway denied the stampede, calling it a rumor (later deleted the statement).
  • 11:36 PM – Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw tweeted saying everything was under control, despite bodies arriving at hospitals.
  • 12:27 AM – LNJP Hospital confirmed 15 dead, 10 injured.
  • 12:56 AM – PM Modi tweeted condolences, acknowledging the tragedy for the first time.
  • 1:09 AM – Railway Minister Vaishnaw finally admitted deaths, after hours of denial.

New Delhi Stampede: Public Outrage & Political Storm

The opposition, including Congress and TMC, has slammed the Railway Minister, demanding his immediate resignation over the gross negligence.

Congress leader Supriya Shrinate stated:

“Railway Minister must take moral responsibility and resign immediately.”

TMC MP Sagarika Ghosh accused the government of a cover-up, saying:

“First, the Modi government denied the stampede. Then called it a rumor. Then admitted injuries. Only when dead bodies surfaced, they accepted the deaths.”

Northern Railway’s Response: Blame on Passengers?

Northern Railway spokesperson Himanshu Upadhyay stated:

“Passengers slipped on the stairs of the foot-over bridge, causing the tragic incident.”

This explanation has sparked massive backlash, as critics argue that railway negligence and mismanagement led to the tragedy.

Timeline of the Next 4 Hours After the Stampede

10:48 PM: 1 hour 22 minutes after the stampede
Delhi Fire Services reported that a situation similar to a stampede was observed at New Delhi Railway Station. They received a call, and four fire trucks had already reached the incident site.

11:11 PM: 1 hour 50 minutes after the stampede
News agency ANI reported, citing Northern Railway’s CPRO, that no stampede had occurred at New Delhi Railway Station. This was termed as a rumor, although the post was later deleted.

11:36 PM: 2 hours 10 minutes after the stampede
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw made his first tweet, stating that the situation at New Delhi Railway Station was under control. Delhi Police and RPF had arrived at the scene, and the injured had been taken to the hospital.

11:52 PM: 2 hours 26 minutes after the stampede
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw made another tweet, clarifying that additional trains were being arranged to manage the crowd. Four more special trains were deployed for Prayagraj, reducing the congestion.

11:55 PM: 2 hours 29 minutes after the stampede
By this time, photos and videos of the stampede had circulated widely. Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena expressed grief over the loss of lives due to the incident for the first time. However, within half an hour, the edited post removed any mention of deaths.

12:13 AM: 2 hours 47 minutes after the stampede
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh tweeted, calling the New Delhi Railway Station incident distressing news. He expressed condolences to the affected families.

12:27 AM: 3 hours 3 minutes after the stampede
The medical officer at LNJP Hospital confirmed that 15 people had died in the incident at New Delhi Railway Station, with 10 others injured.

12:56 AM: 3 hours 30 minutes after the stampede
Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted his condolences for the tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. He expressed sympathy for those who lost their loved ones and wished for the speedy recovery of the injured.

1:09 AM: 3 hours 43 minutes after the stampede
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw finally acknowledged the deaths caused by the stampede. He tweeted, expressing condolences for the deceased and mentioning that railway teams were actively providing assistance to the affected families.

New Delhi Stampede: Who Will Take Responsibility?

The stampede at New Delhi Railway Station was not just an accident but a disaster waiting to happen. Despite clear warning signs, the authorities failed to act, resulting in the tragic deaths of 18 innocent people.

  • Overcrowding was preventable.
  • Better crowd control measures could have saved lives.
  • Clear communication could have avoided the panic.

As investigations continue, the question remains: Will the government take accountability, or will this be another tragedy lost in political blame games?
